1. What is the cause of cervical cancer?

An infection of HPV, a sexual transmitted disease. Once the virus is in the tissue of the cervix, it is infected cell by cell by cell. In the lapse of years, it can cause cervical cancer.

2. How does it affect the patient?

It depends on the time since there are other factors and infections that can take place. There can be another diseases, for example, AIDS. If you treat only the infection of HPV, you will not have cervical cancer.

3. What are the short term and long term prognosis? What are the treatment options?

If you find the cancer in an early stage, with a surgery you can resolve the problem but if you make a diagnosis in a late stage, you will need chemotherapy or radiotherapy in order to get an effective treatment.

4. How do you find this disease?

You find the disease with a pap smear. That is the principle study that we do in all patients to find the cancer or pre cancer. We need to do a biopsy of the cervix in order to confirm the disease. The only way that I can tell a patient that they have cervical cancer, is with a biopsy.

5. How does a patient recover from this disease?

When you do only a surgery, obviously it is a big surgery, it can take 5 weeks but if you need another treatment like chemotherapy and radiotherapy it is a long time. This treatments last about 2 to 3 months and then a surveillance is needed.

6. Is there any new way to prevent this disease?

Yes, there are two ways to prevent this disease. The most common one is the pap smear, but now we have vaccines for the HPV virus not the cancer.

Its a vaccine that prevents the cancer this is caused by the HPV virus. There are two vaccines in Mexico. One protects from four viruses meanwhile the other one protects from two viruses. We put three doses to the patient and this provides a 95% protection against the virus. Once you have a cancer, there is no way to stop the progression. The only things left are surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

7. What is the survival rate of this disease?

In an early stage, we are talking about 85%-90% alive in 5 years. It only takes a surgery to recover from this disease. Meanwhile, if you are in an advanced stage,like stage 3 or 4, you only have a 50%-60% of being alive in 5 or 10 years.

8. Are you able to have children with this disease?

Yes, of course. Almost 80% of couples that have sexual activity, are at risk of having an HPV virus. There is no proof that you can´t be a mother if you have this virus.
