The BTB which is an academic discourse community for men of color at the UW. Common genres are class sessions, meetings with teachers. Expectations are to be to class on times and maintain academic language use. Also very important to respect peers.

I also want to join a frat. I would like to join because i feel as do it would help me with my discipline as well as help me to build a larger network of people. Norms are helping out with events and being present.

Another discourse community I would like to join is the AMA because of the connections and opportunities it offers.

I am also a part of a small tennis community with my friends. The genre is to play tennis. We go out every once in a while to play and have fun. The norm is to not take it too seriously and just continue playing and staying active.

I would like to join the Husky Tennis Club in the spring. I would like to join because it seems like a fun community and a way to keep playing a good sport. I would also like to join the UW Business Ethics Association because it provides a good opportunity to join a community of business majors wanting to maintain ethical business procedures.

AMA (American Marketing Association) - Get to classroom and pull out materials (laptop), listen to the powerpoint presentation, students leave and leadership stays after for event/marketing planning. Expectations are to get there on time and be ready to learn and contribute.

Step Up Dance Crew - Audition for team, go to weekly practices and learn choreography for different dances and styles (Kpop and hiphop), practice between classes. The expectation is that you are serious about dance.

To be accepted you first audition and get in. Then to learn your way around you often start on a lower part and work your way up as your experience grows. In general the norms are standard (be respectful and accountable), but also know your part.

2- Cycling club

To be accepted all you need to do is show up with a bike and a helmet. The community is very welcoming so you don't need to do much to learn your way around. However there are general safety rules and guidelines that you need to follow in order to go to group rides.

• ISAUW (Indonesian organization for UW)

• IFGF church group

To apply for these discourse communities, I required different genres/language practices

Both of them require Indonesian language since one is an Indonesian organization the other is an Indonesian church.

To apply to ISAUW, because i needed to make a resume, I had to learn how to make a college level resume. I also needed to review said resume and answer a few essay questions. Then I was interviewed so I had to learn how to answer interviews

As a newcomer i need to get to know my upperclassmens and other people who are there. I would need to hone my social skills and also shadow in them.

I would like to join a business community or a sports/study related group. I would like to join because i feel these groups would be useful to me in manyways in the future

Another community I belong to is my study group. Some genres we participate in are study sessions. I need to communicate with them to be accepted, and add my own comments as well.

One community I would like to join is the mesh fashion designer club. Some genres are teaching session more specifically sewing class session. Some expectations are attending meetings and being respectful of the people and sewing machines.

• You must participate in various meetings and events hosted by the club to be accepted. Furthermore, you must have an interest in anything business-related. The meetings are structured so that the club's leadership does most of the talking and outlines the agenda so that the meeting flows smoothly. The newcomers typically learn "the ropes" by learning about the club through fairs and/or going to the opening meeting.

DC2: Hiking Group

• Be open to hiking with new groups of people. You are expected to like hiking, have the appropriate gear, and sign up for hikes that you find enjoyable. Newcomers typically learn "the ropes" by asking fellow members.

One that I will like to join is something related to golf. I've been golfing for around 6 years and had a great community back at home. Therefore, I want to build a similar community here at UW.

Another community that I am a part of is Intramural basketball and flag football. Here, my voice stands more equally because everyone else is also a freshman, looking to have some fun. There is no "learning the ropes" involved because everyone knows each other and is already comfortable communicating with each other

A community I would like to join would be IBA because I want to pursue investment banking in the future. Learning the skills and practices that I need to be a successful investment banker would be nice.

Another discourse community I belong to is the IMA/Gym community. Again, similar to the fraternity, it is based on how you interact with people. I would say some norms or expectations are like gym etiquette.

Another discourse I would like to join in the future is some Business RSOs. I don't know any specific ones, but I think they would help me with my major and provide some unique opportunities.

Another discourse community I am a part of is my math quiz section. the expectation is to show up, ask for and receive help. My role as a student would be to receive help, and maybe help other students around me if TA's are busy.

A discourse community I want to join is the UW M.E.Ch.A RSO, it was founded to advocate for the political and cultural interest of Chicano's, and hold various events to get to know others and fosters a community within a community. The expectations to join the community are to show up to meetings, and maybe help with events that will be held.
