Trout usually go to a place where the current isn't that strong so they don't have to waste a lot of energy. The water has to be moving fast enough for their prey to basically just swim towards the trout.

I wonder what could possibly be happening to the trout? I mean, not just ONE population could cause all that damage! I know well enough, and I'm sure that you know too, that the trout have PLENTY of options. This's got to be happening at the source, with the producers, but what?

There could possibly be an issue with the food web. Maybe one animal like plankton could be dying, leading up to trout and other animals running out of food.

Could the prey of trout be moving somewhere else? The temperature of the water could be too cold or warm for their prey leading to them swimming somewhere else causing lake trout to run out of food.
