PowerPoint: Eight Easy Ways to Make Your Presentation Stand Out

1. I've had to create a lot of presentations for report outs to stakeholders lately, so I thought it was time to refresh my skills
2. I thought the eight easy ways were good, but some of them don't translate well to accessibility concerns (like adding animations, or using lots of pictures with no mention of alt-text).
3. There were good ideas on how to make the presentations engaging and more than just text on a screen, but as mentioned above, I would advise looking at the tips through a lens of accessibility before implementing them.

I didn’t realize that so many people have disabilities but they don’t even know/haven’t been diagnosed
3. To make sure that we do follow the accessibility best practices at all times (i.e., not only in presentations but in guidance docs). Color contrast, captions/transcripts, and alternate text are so important (I had no idea). Have long and short

*** I found it very interesting that they mentioned acronyms as a potential language disability. Personally, I FOR SURE felt incompetent my first year at Harvard with the acronyms people were throwing around. The military at least has them listed in their "smartbook." So I did the next best thing and googled it. Turns out, I didn't get many hits. I know OPC is working on it (thank you OPC!) but it's something that we (myself included) should keep in mind whenever we reference any acronyms in our presentations, guidance docs, and websites ***

Teaching Techniques: Making Accessible Learning
1. I chose this training because I often wonder if we are doing enough as educators to meet accessibility needs of our students. Do we think in this realm when we are creating courses? How can we do better?
2. Simplifying assessments to drive home teaching points. It's less important to have complex examples that address "ABCD and XYZ," and more important that everyone fully understand "ABC."
3. We could make a URATT resource for accessibility guidance. A PowerPoint template may not be a bad idea, but I would worry that our courses may look redundant and less creative.

I watched Instructional Design for Adult Learners, Teaching Techniques: Making Accessible Learning, and started (but did not finish yet) PowerPoint Tips and Tricks for Business Presentations.
1. I chose these trainings to get another perspective on these topics, and to round out some of the existing knowledge I had.
2. I was familiar with the frameworks (70-20-10, Knowles Andragogy) covered in the ID course, but it was useful to see them explained again. For the Accessible Learning, I found it helpful to think about designing content to be delivered in multiple modalities, and to build in a variety of assessment approaches.
3. Both the ID and Accessibility course reinforced for me the idea that as we design new material, we should be thinking about (a) how the learner will apply the knowledge, i.e. what is their motivation for taking the course? (b) how to build in more independent and peer-learning exercises, with periodic guidance from instructors (c) revisiting designing for accessibility in all our materials. I have been focusing lately on guidance for self-paced learning (i.e. created in Storyline) but want to think about how that can be expanded to other formats.
