Autism Spectrum Disorder

The article found on CNN's website was posted when a 6 year old boy diagnosed with Autism went missing. The child was accompanied by his father and the father's friend during the time of his disappearance. His father allow his son freedom to run ahead of them and for some time the child was in their line of vision. Eventually the accompanied adults realized they lost sight of the boy. Unable to find the child they brought it to the park officials attention to seek help locating him. The father gave an account his child was possibly intrigued by a runner and followed him or her. Several days passed while the search for the missing child was conducted. A lake in the same park was semi-drained and the child's body was found. From the information gathered details on the child's diagnosis (Autism Spectrum Disorder) was not released specifically for his case other than he was mute (Rehbein & Vera, 2018).
For the purpose of this assignment we will assume the child as properly diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder by the correct personnel. This indicates at the time of diagnosis he meet six or more of the diagnostic criteria (American Psychological Association [APA], 2018). It seems obvious the child meet the criteria's for the diagnosis. Earlier I mentioned only one specific detail was released regarding his case which I can tie to the DSM- 5.
The DSM criteria that seem to met the child's diagnosis was being nonverbal lacking the ability to communicate with others (APA, 2013, p. 50). According to his parents he was fully muted. Again, no other information was released to further more relay back to the DSM 5. The media had only the information provided by the parents to portray he was an autistic child. I feel they did well since this could have easily received other diagnosis by some who are not qualified and called it another diagnosis. The number of autism diagnosis are increasing which means people are aware of the captivating disease. Given the nature of the situation, more tragedy, I have not read or seen on the news any stereotypes regarding the child's diagnosis. The only negative information is the child's father being accused of intentionally letting him wander off for other purposes undisclosed at this time.

Citations
1.
