The first step of the ARCS model is to make sure you have your learner's attention. There are many ways to achieve this, including adding humor to your lessons. There is no need to force a joke, but if you can manage to add something that will make the learners laugh, go ahead and add it. Another way to keep your learner's attention is by varying your presentation. It will be difficult to hold the attention of your learner for an hour if you just stand and lecture the entire time. If you break your lecture up into sections and add videos to help present your ideas, your learners will be more inclined to pay attention.

The second step of the ARCS model is relevance. You want to make sure your instruction is relevant to your learners. One way to make this happen is to relate your new lessons to previous lessons. This way, learners know there is importance in the lesson, and it serves a purpose. Another way to ensure relevance in your instruction, is to offer a choice. For instance, you can allow learners to complete an assignment by submitting an essay or doing a project.

The best way to make this happen is providing opportunities for success.
