The history of the electric car began in the middle of the 19th century. Probably between 1832 and 1839, the Scottish inventor Robert Anderson developed the first electric vehicle in Aberdeen.

The first known German electric car was the Flocken electric car of 1888; it was manufactured by Maschinenfabrik A. Flocken in Coburg. This four-wheeled electric carriage was probably the world's first electrically powered passenger car.

Around the same time, the Russians Yablochkov and Romanov designed the first cars with electric motors. In the early days of motor vehicles, after steam cars, but even before vehicles with internal combustion engines, which were considered the basis of automobiles from about 1910, electric vehicles were technically superior to competitors in several respects.

Fuel cell cars have many advantages: hydrogen can be stored and transported relatively easily. The tank process is much faster than an e-car, the ranges are 500 kilometers and more. To achieve these, no heavy batteries are needed. This makes the hydrogen drive also interesting for commercial vehicles and trucks that need to cover wide routes. However, the recovery of hydrogen would have to be optimized. For this you need large amounts of electricity that is ideally produced CO2-neutral. According to the eco-institution, the current electric mix of the mixture in Germany is still about half of fossil fuels. Despite a rising share of renewable energies on power generation, it still takes until the fuel vehicle drives climate-neutral. It is also advantageous that the electric motor is locally free of emission. The drive noise is very quiet.

An essential problem: The double drive train ensures more weight - especially on longer motorway rides can even lead to rising fuel consumption.

The first vehicle to be a mix of electric and petrol vehicles was the Sempe Vivus, also developed by Porsche around 1900. Here, two generators driven by petrol engines form a charging unit that supplies the batteries and the wheel hub electric motors that drive the vehicle with electricity. Because the designer broke new technical ground with this first functional serial hybrid, the Zuffenhausen-based sports car manufacturer of the same name now sees Ferdinand Porsche as the 'pioneer of hybrid drive'. Especially since in 1902 with the Lohner-Porsche Mixte the production version of the Sempe Vivus came onto the market, so to speak.

But the future should not belong to this first serial hybrid concept. The comparatively high weight as well as complex and ultimately too expensive technology were among other arguments that spoke against a hybrid car and in favor of vehicles that only had a combustion engine. It was of course known that an electric motor had a significantly higher degree of efficiency than a petrol-driven engine, but it could not compensate for the disadvantages of the electric and hybrid vehicles of the time.
