- Say it in a few words as possible. Instead of "This week in science we will be learning about the life cycle of butterflies," say "Science - butterfly life cycle" and include a graphic of the life cycle.
- Avoid jargon. Instead of "JCPS policy states that..," say "At this school, we..."
-Accept one or two word responses
- Use advanced vocabulary with purpose. By all means use advanced vocabulary when teaching ELLs, but don't overload lessons with it and choose tier 2 vocabulary that is applicable across curricular areas (e.g., bound, layer)

- Communicate with parents early and often. This helps build trust with families. Conduct home visits when possible to provide parents an opportunity to interact with school personnel in a familiar comfortable environment. Parents will be more willing to discuss their needs in this setting.

- Provide learning opportunities that are authentic. Engaging students in authentic, creative tasks connects their learning to their real lives, which makes it purposeful and memorable.
- Build background knowledge. With most ELLs coming from vastly different cultures and places, what we at times view as "common knowledge" is not common at all. This can make reading a very decontextualized exercise and render many texts inaccessible without proper supports.

- Encourage families to continue to develop their children's native language skills. Language literacy skills (especially phonics decoding) are largely transferrable between languages. Vocabulary building in a native language is also concept building.
-Teach code-switching between languages, and the informal and formal versions of each language
-Honor the validity and importance native languages hold to families
-Assign a helpful buddy who speaks the same language
