The aim of creating “artificial general intelligence”(AGI) by OpenAI has alarmed experts in the tech sector. Former safety researcher at OpenAI William Saunders and current Tesla chief executive Elon Musk both expressed concerns that OpenAI may neglect the dangerous capabilities of AI and unleash powerful AI that evades human control if reckless development of AGI were to continue. Experts described the race towards constructing powerful AI tools by tech giants such as OpenAi, Google and Microsoft as putting safety into the back seat.Max Tegmark, a key figure in AI safety debate echoed these concerns and stressed that this “race to the bottom” must be stopped. Regarding these noises, OpenAI stated that their safety and security committee will be granted independency as they approach every development with “safety at every step” (Milmo, 2024).

Technology experts are triggered by the potential breakthroughs in the AI industry—AGI, which is an AI system that is more powerful than humans. Widespread of safety concerns in AGI is provoked, worrying if the rapid development of AGI would cause problems that is out of human control. This issue is further enhanced due to the competition between the large tech companies such as OpenAI and Google, who prioritise development of more powerful AI tools while ignore the importance of safety (The Guardian, 2024).

Artificial general intelligence”(AGI), the current goal of Open AI, was described by the company as “AI systems that are generally smarter than humans. Such potential imposed threats upon the tech industry. Experts were worried about the safety of developing AGI, one being evading human control. William Saunders, a former OpenAI employee, believes that its creation would lead to “dangerous capabilities in future AI systems”, criticizing OpenAI’s unthoughtfulness. In spite of Open AI’s announcement of the independence of its safety and security committee, after judging the trend of present tech factor, many warns that safety might be neglected by most companies in this race of AI development.

OpenAI aims to build “artificial general intelligence” (AGI) - “AI system generally smarter than humans”. There are already debates before the advent of AGI. AGI is a latent breakthrough that might agitate the technological specialists like Tesla CEO, Elon. Non-stop AGI development might release the powerful system that will escape from our control. “a real risk they will miss important dangerous capabilities in future AI system” (Saunders, 2024), expressed that he lost his faith. Specialists are worrying that there’s an AI race between sectors and they would possibly not prior safety. A US academic figure Tegmark concerned the endless race need to be stopped.

Developing artificial general intelligence(AGI) is one of the goal of OpenAI. AGI is the AI models that are more clever than human. Being one of the possible advance of AI, experts worry that the unlimited development of AGI would create powerful systems that human cannot control. The race on building the ultimate AGI systems may cause less concerns about safety for the tech companies. Blindly developing without considerations could cause dangerous potentials of AI to be overlooked. Due to the rising amount of concerns, OpenAI assures the public that they would consider safety before taking any step, and states that their safety and security committee will be an independent sector.
