What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

Learning Collaboratively is a give and take process. To be able to collaborate, one must be receptive to his or her communication partners and in this case, the whole healthcare team. Similarly, to successfully collaborate, an individual must also be able to provide knowledge and understanding. In this way, both parties contribute to the development of one another and, most importantly, achieve mutual progress.

What did I discover about myself?

For someone who has been affiliated with organizations, it must be apparent that I work well with groups. However, I have learned that when I am working with a completely different and new set of crowds, I tend to be somewhat apprehensive. There are times where I would prefer to work with myself thinking that I can accomplish it faster and more efficiently. Nonetheless, I rediscovered that I like improving aspects of myself which motivates me to go out of my comfort zone.

In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

Having learnings in life are great for I am able to employ them in various situations and contexts. Hence, I am satisfied to say that I would be equipped with the knowledge of Learning Collaboratively in both areas. This is to say that no man is an island, and it is inevitable not to work with others. I may be able to use them personally by adapting and knowing more about what I can improve on myself. On the other hand, apply it professionally by engaging and improving my work ethics and relationships.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on "Learning Collaboratively" and "Patient-Centered Care"?

One of the key insights I learned from the sessions is that Collaborative Learning leans toward the effort of a team in making ends meet in achieving or learning something as a group. In other words, Learning Collaboratively is a two-way street meaning that a member of the party must contribute a reasonable amount of information, effort, and any form of communication in order to create progress in the team while the other members receive that effort and reciprocates it creating a continuous cycle of progress.

2. What did I discover about myself?

As an individual who is independent in terms of studying, doing tasks, etc. I found myself working better in a group and I work more efficiently when people work progressively like individuals who communicate well such as people who remind certain deadlines and who constantly update up on their progress on a task. I also discovered that when I am placed with a whole new set of individuals, I do not shy away from communicating because I know that we are all here for we all have a common goal and purpose.

3. In which areas, personal or professional, will I use what I learned?

As a future Sports Scientist, I will definitely be placed in collaborative settings my whole career and I will use what I’ve learned by applying it first with myself. Continuously learning about how I can become a better person and know more about the skills I need to improve on in order to properly relay information and skills to the people with who I will be working with. Forming and maintaining relationships is a must in life and in this career path that I have chosen, I learned how to properly engage myself in the concept of collaborative learning and patient-centered care.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?
I learned that it's important that we view our patients as individuals who have a life outside of their condition. We must consider their motivation, feelings, and willingness to undergo assessment and treatment. Especially for patients who have a lot of comorbidities, it may be difficult for them to understand how each of the area affect each other. It is our job as the healthcare professionals to keep them motivated and informed about the effects of their condition in their quality of life. Additionally, we collaborate with the family of the patient as well. It's not only us that work but it's also important for them to take part in the process. When they are involved, the patient would see how the treatment strategies can be applied in his or her daily life.

2. What did I discover about myself?
There are a lot of collaborations that will happen in an SLPs life. I've always been used to working on my own and I think that I understand the topic when I have full control of it. I find it hard to talk to others about my work and I also have a hard time receiving critiques from others. However, I realized that having dominance over an area will not benefit a patient at all. He or she deserves a holistic development that is why it is important for professionals to work together for the patient's well-being.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?
I would use what I learned in my everyday life by knowing when to ask for help. I am not the type of person who likes to ask help from others because I don't like the feeling of not knowing something. The learnings from the topic helped me realize that it's alright to ask for help from others may it be in academics or in other personal matters. At work, especially for beginning clinicians, we might encounter cases or patients that might be overwhelming for us to handle. That is why it is best to consult and ask for advice from others in knowing what to do. It's also important that you trust yourself throughout the process.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient Centered Care”?

Collaboration, indeed, saves lives. In this way, the healthcare that we provide transforms from time to time. It teaches how we should understand the different roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals that could help us in promoting a more holistic service and approach to the people we serve. Putting people in the center of healthcare must be practiced by everyone. We should give our patients the service and care that is respectful to them and ensures their value, preferences, needs, and decisions especially that they are the ones who are experiencing a lot.

2. What did I discover about myself?

I used to work well with groups but as my community grew bigger and bigger, I became quiet and chose to be a member who would just follow and or do things on my own. But then I realized that it is really effective to work with other people to correct our mistakes and for us to educate others, and vice versa.

3. In which areas, personally or professionally, will I use what I learned?

These lessons will be used and adapted holistically. Both personally and professionally, asking for help is not bad at all. In fact, if we open ourselves to be helped by others, it will make us better.

1. In collaboration with other professionals, we are not just providing our patients a better experience with the healthcare system, but we also allow ourselves to gain new knowledge and skills from our team members.

2.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

Firstly, I didn’t expect that there was a high number of deaths due to miscommunication or lack of interaction between medical professionals. It was never about the lack of skill but rather how each person on the team did not effectively communicate with one another. In other words, “collaboration saves lives.” Being able to work with people from different departments help in further understanding a patient’s condition and this may be the necessary nudge in order to give a patient a fighting chance to live. Furthermore, collaboration does not only encompass those who deliver health care but also those who can improve a patient’s or client’s quality of life such as wheelchair fabricators, engineers and etc. Likewise, it also becomes a collaboration with the patient himself via patient-centered care. The patient or client has the power to decide along with the healthcare professional with regards to achieving his/her optimal health & wellness. Patient-centered care is not about the disease but rather the patient. One must consider their needs and capabilities as well.

2. What did I discover about myself?

As an introvert, I realized that interaction with others is a must especially in my career path. I discovered that I am somewhat doubtful in my abilities to the point that I feel like I’d rather stay quiet than look stupid. However, that shouldn’t be the case. Being able to collaborate with others means that it is part of growing, as an individual and as a future healthcare professional. Furthermore, I also realized that I should be empathetic and sensitive to what others are feeling. Since there is an emphasis on patient-centered care in my future occupation, these two characteristics is a necessity when encountering patients or clients. I should be able to understand that what they are going through is no easy feat and that I should be patient with them.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

Personally, I believe that I will be able to use what I learned even outside my career. For example, if I plan to build a house, I need to collaborate with the engineer, architect, interior designer and many more so that I can see my dream turn into reality. It also applies in the family especially when conflicts arise. One must learn to work with each other so that these issues can be resolved quickly. Additionally, being empathetic and sensitive to others can be applicable not just to patients but even to the random people you see. Friends can be a great example. Some do not wish to share their problem but you know that they need to let it all out. You need to be sensitive as to what your friend needs, whether it’s an open ear or someone to give advice.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient Centered Care”
I have learned that it is important to be skilled in our own professions, and as well as recognize other team players of the rehab team to provide the best care to our patients. With this, communication is indeed vital. Through collaborative learning, we can remove communication barriers in both formal and informal settings, and help each other to deliver quality care to our patients.

2. What did I discover about myself?
First and foremost, I discovered that I am capable of adapting to changes. In this course, we have to be flexible in other people’s schedule. Moreover, I discovered that I have this curiosity about what other professions do and what we can do together as a team to provide quality care. Lastly, I am made aware that the key to good communication, is having the initiative to speak in which I believed I did during in one of our activities.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?
With everything that I have learned and experienced, I can put them all in good use to further enhance my social skills and my skills as a future physical therapist. In our field, it is important to have good communication and social skills as we are not only exposed to patients/clients, but also to other professionals. Lastly, I will use my skills in collaborative work in order to help solve problems, figure out strengths and weaknesses, and provide good services in the future.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

Comprehending these two lessons made me realize the importance of interprofessional education in the healthcare system. Prior to listening to the video lectures, I perceived interprofessional education as a means for us, future healthcare providers, to develop a dynamic relationship among ourselves and to understand the role of other professions. However, I have realized that this interdisciplinary practice not only benefits us, but our patients as well. Learning with, from, and about each other enhances both the collaboration of the team and the quality of care the patient receives. In addition, I have learned to appreciate the “art” of patient-centered care, wherein we consider numerous elements to provide the topnotch quality of healthcare to the patient, without excluding him/her and his/her family from the process.

2. What did I discover about myself?

I have already collaborated with a lot of people, may it be my groupmates, my classmates, my orgmates, or even my friends. With these experiences, I have realized that I practice the values pakikisama and pakikipagkapwa, regardless of my relationship with them. I tend to work well with other people as I enjoy our abilities to exchange ideas and/or information. However, I believe I could think best when I am alone, since I can solely focus on my work. I have realized that I prefer meeting the team prior to doing the actual task to facilitate the exchange of ideas, then accomplishing our own tasks independently at our own pace (or vice versa). I believe this will be beneficial for those who work best during a specific time of the day (e.g. Morning person vs Evening person). Nevertheless, this preference of mine may not be always favorable for the whole group; hence, I still have to challenge myself — to be able to accomplish a task even with the presence of others, and regardless of the time of day.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

The different values being practiced by Filipinos are essential to establish a relationship with someone. Although these come naturally, I believe we could control when we will exemplify a specific value. Personally, if I were to meet someone for the first time, I would definitely avoid practicing pakikisangkot as it may throw them off (it could also make them feel uncomfortable). I believe that the proper exemplification of these values could help create or maintain a fruitful relationship with others. Moreover, when it comes to patient-centered approach, I would try to establish rapport to the patient (regardless of their race, social status, age, etc.) and listen to their stories — to know them better and for them to feel included in the rehabilitation process. This practice will not only make me a better healthcare professional, it will also improve the quality of care the patient receives. Lastly, I hope that we would be able to exhibit interprofessional competency during this course, where we collaborate with each other, with our patients, and with other people who could help us achieve our goals.

What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

- In this session, one key insight that struck a chord with me was about emphasizing the separate individual perspective of our patients and taking it into account when we provide health care services. I understand now that it is imperative that we give patients and their family members the ability to collaborate with health care providers such as ourselves by informing them of some of the decisions available for them so that they would better fit it with their values, preference and beliefs. By informing them also of their current condition and situation, we can keep them out of the dark and empower them by giving them more knowledge about it.

2. What did I discover about myself?

- When I visualize trying to work as a PT, I always imagine doing the different examinations and interventions according to the knowledge I learned as a student and that I and my colleagues alone should know what to decide to do with the patient. With patient-centered care in mind, a physical therapist student like me should realize early that the patient's holistic well-being should really be given more importance knowing how much they need to feel that they have a part or role in their rehabilitation process.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

Personally, I would like to be more emphatic to everyone I know from now on. In my mind, before I can truly practice empathy in professional practice, I should be able to do it in my day-to-day dealings with my family, friends or even strangers. Professionally, I would make sure to remember the essentials of PCC when providing PT services from the subjective assessments to the interventions I would be handling.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

Communication is the key to a successful collaboration. We need to understand each other to be able to move together towards our mutual goal. This is important not only when working with other healthcare professionals but also when working with patients and their families. Also, I learned that a successful collaboration is not a choice; it is a must since patients deserve the best treatment from us. Lastly, I realized that it is a great opportunity to collaborate with others since I get to learn more and others get to learn from me too.

2. What did I discover about myself?

Before, I thought that I am good at collaborating with others especially since we have a lot of group activities in OT. However, I realize that I do not only need to collaborate with other people in the field of OT. I would need to collaborate with other healthcare providers as well as patients and their families. As I got to work with my IPE groupmates, I realized how hard it is to actually collaborate especially since I do not specifically know what they do in their programs. Thus, I need to work on how I can better help and ask for help in our group.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

I will use what I learned by trying to understand what other people are expressing. A lot of times, I tend to focus only on words and not on feelings. This will be very helpful in all aspects of my life.

1) What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

As Speech-Language Pathologists, we pride ourselves in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating speech, language, social communication, and swallowing disorders. We work with clients across the lifespan and may work in various settings which include clinics, hospitals, schools, academe, the community, and many more. There we apply all the practical skills we have learned theoretically at college. SLPs as professionals provide assessments, write reports, and conduct therapies to habilitate and or rehabilitate individuals. On the other hand, SLPs’ non-professional roles and responsibilities may include counseling patients and families beyond work hours to provide support. This would include exhibiting interpersonal skills to better relate with them. Another example may be through being a leader or point of authority in a team of professionals. This would encompass collaborating with them, exchanging ideas, and healthily working together for the betterment of everyone.

2) What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

Role clarity plays an important role in ensuring a clear understanding of how each may work individually and collectively. With respect to proper role clarity, adherence to it would enable professionals to not overstep their boundaries as well as work efficiently and effectively on what is asked of them. I cannot express how valuable role clarity among members of the team is considering that it is a pivotal foundation for everyone to come together and still perform their distinct roles. If ever roles have been blurred, unfavorable outcomes may result wherein issues amongst team members and clients may arise.

What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

As a future Sports Scientist or Strength and Conditioning coach, the main goal is to offer athletes and coaches expert guidance and support to help them understand and improve sports performance by using evidence-based, quality-assured practices to analyze and design effective training and competition tactics or interventions that is specific towards their needs and bring them to a better way of life in terms of physical fitness and optimal performance. Moreover, the non-professional roles of a Sports Scientist or Strength and Conditioning coach is to provide an environment wherein the scientist/ coach and athlete have a healthy relationship in terms of being always present in trainings, provide psychological help if the athlete or client is need of reassurance or guidance. As a coach, you come as a second parent to your client especially when working with minors. This is a tasking role because when training young individuals you must know the responsibilities of your words and actions because this is what the psychological foundation of the child will depend on and how he/she will perceive physical fitness or sports. Being a sports scientist is not as basic as society pointed it out to be.

1. What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

Physical therapists take on many roles and responsibilities such as being a team player, helping a patient reach his/her optimal function, and many more. Generally speaking, physical therapists provide care across all age groups, from newborns to people at the end of life. PTs not only treat those who have acquired injuries but also those who wish to prevent such occurrences. Professionally, a physical therapist examines a patient or client which is used to a create a treatment plan that aims to improve one’s ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability. PTs are responsible to document each session to evaluate a patient or client’s progress. On the other hand, a physical therapist’s non-professional roles and responsibilities may include being a friend or a motivator to a patient or client. As we all know, rehab is very difficult and may take a long time depending on the severity of the condition that the patient may have. As PTs, we have to show that our patient’s efforts are not fruitless and that everything will be worth it in the end. Moreover, a PT is also a team player meaning communication is something that defines a physical therapist. Being able to share ideas and knowledge to the rehab team not only helps the patient or the team, but also furthers the understanding of the PT himself.

2. What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

Role clarity is a crucial concept that each member of the rehab team must know and inculcate. Role clarity pertains to the awareness and understanding of how each team member work in their respective profession and as a member of the team. This allows everyone to know what each person’s roles and responsibilities encompass in certain tasks. Thus, this allows perfect harmony between members when tackling particular duties. It allows the team to be efficient and effective when it comes to treating a patient and also brings a sense of unity. If role clarity is not taken seriously, conflicts may arise which can lead not only to the disruption of the “team tandem” but may also affect how we treat our patients.

1. What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

As future physical therapists, we play various roles in the healthcare setting, academics, and in organizations. In healthcare, we mainly provide services to patients who complain of difficulties that they encounter that disrupts their daily lives such as difficulty in ambulating, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, shortness of breath, pain, and neurological affectations as well. We also provide services to clients who aim to improve and maintain their health. In academics, PTs can also be educators and researchers; and last but not the least, PTs can also run clinics, become managers, and a team leader. Meanwhile, non-professional roles of PTs are observed when we interact with other patients or clients, and with other professionals. It focuses on communication, establishment of trust, and cultivation of teamwork and optimism in the workplace.

2. What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

In rehabilitation, patients get referred to different healthcare professionals depending on their condition; hence, there are could be instances where roles overlap. With this, it is important to clarify the scopes of different professions in order to avoid confusions and miscommunication. Tasking and organizing roles and responsibilities promote work efficiency as it can save time and establish harmony within a team. This can also help each individual to focus in order to ensure quality service. With all things considered, role clarity among team members will contribute to the overall efficiency and quality of service that professionals can provide for their patient.

1. What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

The professional responsibilities of physical therapists include providing rehabilitation programs and interventions to optimize the patient’s capacity to function within their society. However, before reaching this stage, we must first conduct a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s problems (within their environment), to customize the treatment plan to the patient. Moreover, we are also responsible for evaluating and re-evaluating the patient’s condition and progress, to determine whether the treatment plan is gearing towards the patient’s goals. In addition, we must also educate the patients regarding their condition, their progress, and their limitations (if there are any). Lastly, we should communicate and collaborate with the patient’s families, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure that all impairments or problems by the patient is addressed; hence, attaining maximum well-being. As for the non-professional roles, we, PTs, must ensure that we will continuously advocate for the society’s health and wellness (i.e. accessibility to health care and PT services). Moreover, we should stay true to our values and principles, and treat our patients equally, regardless of the patient’s age, gender, race, and social status. As healthcare professionals, we are responsible for providing services that go beyond what is expected from us – placing our patient’s needs above ours.

2. What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

Knowing the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals (HCP) in the team is essential in the referral process. As healthcare providers, we should acknowledge the fact that we do not know everything, and that other professionals are there to help achieve the patient’s goals as well. As HCPs, we should practice intellectual humility, and delegate the task to other members of the team, considering that their service would be most beneficial to the patient. It is necessary to utilize our clinical judgement when handling patients with multiple deficits or impairments, to provide a systematic and effective treatment plan. For instance, we (PTs) should address the motor and coordination deficits in patients with stroke, instead of trying to treat their aphasia and dysphagia which could be referred to speech and language pathologists – this way, the intervention plan would be more efficient. The referral system in the healthcare setting not only ensures that the team could work and collaborate efficiently, but also guarantees that a holistic / multidisciplinary service would be given to the patient, hence giving them the opportunity to attain their optimal well-being.

1. What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?
○ As SLPs, we are tasked to provide appropriate assessments and treatments to our patients who have communication disorders. The sessions do not only involve the patient, but it reaches even through the patient’s family members, teachers, and other important people in his life. We make sure that the family stays updated with the child’s progress. We also explain how the strategies can be applied at home, in school, and in other contexts. Communicating with the family not only helps strengthen the relationship between the client and the clinician but it also puts trust on the patient himself because he sees that there are people around him who are willing to help him improve his skills.

○ With the assessments and treatments that we make, these should all come from reliable evidence and not just something we “feel” is right for the patient. We must remember that every patient is different. As SLPs, we should be able to create individualized evaluation and intervention plans so that the techniques would fit the patient’s unique performance and behavior. We should also be able to collaborate with other health professionals needed for the child’s case. This does not only provide holistic development, but also helps in noting the other areas that may be affecting speech, language, and cognition.

2. What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?
○ The members of the team should be clear of their own specific roles for two reasons. First, it helps them know what they need to do as a clinician of the child. It gives the clinician an idea on the extent of aid they should be providing. Second, it helps them know their limits. It is good to contribute ideas and suggest advice to help in managing the patient. However, it was explained in the webinar that we should respect each other’s roles. We cannot be the one who “dominates” the team. As an SLP, I do not know everything about physical therapy, occupational therapy and sports science. I recognize that I have my own field of interest that I am good at and other clinicians have that to. We must know our boundaries and let other people do the work that they are good at. However, it’s always best to voice out our concerns if ever we have them.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

I learned to take into account the patient's well-fare, not just an individual that needs to be treated but as well as a valuable member of the community. As future healthcare professionals, we need to see our patient's not just as our obligation but as someone who like us has emotions. Patient-Centered Care focuses on the active participation of the patient in his/her own well-being. Thus, it is vital that we treat our patients with utmost support and care as they continuously strive to get better. Learning collaboratively aids healthcare professionals in understanding the different roles of the other members of the team. This would help therefore in providing holistic care to the patients to which we offer our services.

2. What did I discover about myself?

I discovered that I still have a long way to go in truly understanding my patient and other people. Normally, I would be too timid to talk to a crowd of people. But because it is my duty to provide the best that I can for others, I realized the value of identifying the value of each member of the team (particularly in the health care setting) and the beliefs of my future patients that entrust their full recovery to us.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

I believe the lessons that I learned can be applied both personally and professionally. Having someone to help out is not something that is considered bad because it just means that there are people that are willing to lend a hand. As future healthcare professionals, working collaboratively will help aid in workplace dynamics and overall in the delivery of care to the patients. This would therefore aid in a better outcome for the patient as we strive to promote patient-centered care. Personally, there is a need to work collaboratively with others especially in making crucial decisions because one's opinion is very important to the decision making process.

1. What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

As Physical therapists, we have different roles and responsibilities that we shoulder in order to provide the necessary care for our patient. Professionally, we are tasked to evaluate, assess, and treat our patients using our clinical reasoning as a guide. Furthermore, procedures should also be documented by us so that all measures are being accounted for. Physical therapists also have a role in educating people about proper positioning and environmental modifications in order to prevent accidents and injuries in home and workplace settings. Physical therapists aids in the restoration of function and movement through the use of various techniques and modalities that centers in the continuous development of the patient. Personally, aside from their professional obligations, a physical therapist is a motivator and empathetic listener such that the concerns of every patient is always taken into consideration while the therapist continuously motivates the patient to strengthen their resolve during or even after treatment. Furthermore, a physical therapist can also be considered a friend especially to those who has lost their motivation in life. The process of rehabilitation is not an easy task not just for the patient but for the therapist as well because they shoulder the burden of having to successfully provide the necessary outcome that the patient wants to have after treatment. A physical therapist is also a good communicator, whether it be professionally or personally, in such that they can communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals while also being able to create a space with the patient with the utmost understanding that they can possibly give.

2. By understanding the concept of role clarity, various members of the healthcare team would be able to discern the purpose of each member in providing care to the patient. By being aware of this, they are able to understand and have an awareness to the benefits that each member contributes to the wellness of the patient. By doing so, the workplace will be able to work efficiently and effectively as each member is able to do their tasks individually without confusion with other members of team. Overall, by having a clear understanding of the roles of each member of the team, we can provide the best outcome for the patient in the most efficient manner.

1. What are the key insights I learned from the session on “Learning Collaboratively” and “Patient-Centered Care”?

Collaborative learning is a platform wherein it starts from two or more people learning or attempting to learn something together. In order for someone to effectively learn collaboratively, he or she needs to encourage someone to lead or to speak up in the group and at the same time convince the whole members of the group to listen to what he or she wants to say. In other words, there should be a give-and-take relationship between the members of the team in order for them to meet their common goals. In a healthcare setup, we can see learning collaboratively or collaboration in Patient-Centered Care. The patient is the focus of different healthcare professionals to give their care on their own expertise but with the common goal of giving the needed care and services to the patient.

2. What did I discover about myself?

As a future Occupational Therapist, I discover that I’m still lacking when it comes to collaboration. I should practice and enhance my communication skills in order for me to effectively collaborate with other healthcare professionals in the future. Improving my communication skills at my age right now is something that I’m amazed about because for the past few years that I tried to communicate with other people, I used to hide my suggestions when it comes to group work. During those times, I just listen and obey what others would tell me to do. I think an effective Occupational therapist is somehow a good listener and at the same time someone who can lead or there will come a time that I will be the one to lead. During that time, I should be more efficient in exchanging words with my future clients and their family members.

3. In which areas, personal or professionally, will I use what I learned?

Collaboration is close to communication and communication leads to understanding. When it comes to my personal life, collaboration with other people will be a good tool to avoid misunderstanding, conflicts, and at the same time fear. To my family members, friends, and the society, collaborating with them would be a great opportunity for me to build good relationships with them. When it comes to my profession, being an Occupational therapist, these learnings that I absorbed from “Learning Collaboratively and Patient-Centered Care”, would be a great help for me to understand why there is a need to collaborate with other health professionals. These will give me an opportunity to give the proper care that my future patients will be needing.

What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession that has become popular for the past few years. Due to the compassionate nature of the profession, many people are drawn to OT careers and the opportunities that they provide to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Being an OT involves the therapeutic use of everyday activities, or occupations, to treat the physical, mental, developmental, and emotional conditions that impact a patient’s ability to perform day-to-day tasks. As such, an occupational therapist is a practitioner who uses therapeutic techniques to improve, rehabilitate, or maintain a patient’s ability to perform everyday activities.

In general, OTs are responsible for a wide range of duties and tasks related to patient care. Depending on the setting in which they work, the roles of an OT often include: evaluating a patient’s condition and needs; developing treatment plans to address a patient’s needs and help them meet specific goals; assessing a patient’s home and/or work environment and recommending adaptations to fit the patient’s needs and improve independence; training patients and their caregivers to use special equipment; assess and document progress for evaluation, billing, and reporting purposes and more.

2.) It is indeed the role and responsibility of Speech-Language Pathologists to assess, diagnose, and treat patients with speech, language, communication, hearing, and swallowing disorders across the lifespan and depth and complexity of different diagnoses and deficits that SLPs treat goes really far beyond that. Professionally, Speech-Language Pathologists conduct formal and informal assessments, set goals and plans for our patients, conduct therapies, provide education for the caregiver and family of our patients, and counselling as well. For the non-professional roles, I believe it goes along with how we should communicate with patients and their families, treating them as a family or a friend.

What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

My role as an occupational therapist is to enhance or enable a person’s quality of life through the therapeutic use of occupations. We provide services to clients of all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics, with or without disability, with a purpose of habilitation, rehabilitation, and promotion of health and wellness. We perform an evaluation where the client's occupational profile is established and the client's occupational performance is analyzed. We need to know the client's specifics such as values and interests, environment and personal contexts, performance patterns and clients factors, and goals and priorities for us to identify the areas that need to be addressed and to be able to select appropriate assessment tools. After synthesizing evaluation findings, we develop an intervention plan with SMART and occupation-based goals, implement the intervention, and through continuous monitoring of the client’s progress, reevaluate and modify the intervention as needed. Moreover, we need to know when to discontinue providing OT services to a client and when to refer a client to other services. As professionals, clinical reasoning is vital in making decisions for our clients, as well as ensuring that everything we do are valid, evidence-based, and consistent with targeted outcomes and client’s goals.

For the non-professional roles, we must establish rapport with our clients and their families for us to effectively communicate and collaborate with them in identifying goals and implementing treatment. We must also be flexible and able to adapt in unexpected situations so that we will still be able to provide the best possible care to our clients no matter the circumstances. We must not be rigid in following the OT process, but go beyond what is expected of us such as providing motivation and emotional support to clients and their families. Within a team, we must be active in contributing ideas, do work and meet goals on time, listen to and respect the other members of the team, and commit to the team and to our shared goals for our client.

What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

Role clarity is crucial for the team to function effectively and manage patients efficiently. As members of the team may have overlapping roles, role clarity prevents them from wasting their energy and time trying to understand and figuring out their own responsibilities that do not overlap with the others. It promotes productivity as the members of the team will already focus on their respective tasks, instead of having a role confusion that may influence and compromise the service and care that they provide their patients. It also ensures each member’s role ownership and accountability.

What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

Occupational therapists have the professional roles and responsibilities of evaluating a client's occupational performance, client factors, performance skills, performance patterns, and contexts; they also provide interventions for them through the use of occupations so that the clients may maintain or increase their independence. As a whole, being an OT entails digging deep into the everyday lives of clients and what each day-to-day activity means to them. OTs provide services to clients from all walks of life and from different settings, including schools, homes, hospitals, and communities. They plan programs and activities which target not just strength, tone, and endurance but also quality of life. With this, it is crucial that OTs are able to understand their clients' wants, needs, and values.

On the other hand, the non-professional roles and responsibilities of OTs include building therapeutic relationships with their clients and providing support to the family of the clients. Given that occupational therapy is a holistic profession, OTs are also tasked with working on both internal and external factors that affect a client's health and well-being. These include trust, a sense of security, and family support.

What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

A team works towards a common goal, Its members may have different areas of specialization and/or tasks but ultimately, the team would be working towards their decided goal. With this, it is important that each member is given a clear role and task so that there would be no unnecessary overlaps within the team. Moreover, with a clear role and task, a member can do better as he is now more focused on that specific area assigned to him. In rehabilitation, clients may sometimes need to have multiple therapies, such as OT, PT, SLP, and SPS. With role clarity, each member of the team would have a clear understanding of what their individual tasks are and how these contribute to the progress of the team. Additionally, the client would not end up paying for or having similar or repeating therapies. Without role clarity, the team would not be able to work efficiently, possibly leading to conflicts or misunderstandings within the team and even with the clients.

1. How did the team communicate?
- We scheduled our own team huddle where we can discuss each of the cases and divide the necessary tasks for each case. Afterwards, we divided into two groups and created a breakout room so the subgroups can talk about the case.
2. What went well and how can it be improved?
- It was efficient because everyone was cooperative. Each member contributed in planning and we were all able to formulate one whole idea from each. I like how our LO tries to encourage all members to share their thoughts and it shows how everyone's opinions are valued. We respected each other's time in scheduling as well.
3. Use the What? So what? Now what? Reflection model by Rolfe et al (2001)
What?
Communication is very important especially if you're working on big cases. In accomplishing PLA3 and PLA4, we had some problems since some members were not available on certain schedules and some members were not present during meetings.
So what?
I learned that given that we're all coming from different places, we have to consider each other's time. In doing the work, we can contribute by volunteering to the task that we think we are good in. Taking initiative is important so that members can see that you are willing to collaborate.
Now what?
Currently, the group's way of meeting and finishing the tasks was good. We are able to see different view points from each practice and see how they work along with our own. There is no pressure too. However, I think what can be improved is the way we talk to each other. It would be good if we talk more (Verbally) and discuss how we would answer the questions instead of having separate tasks for each. Although, I can see that it is more efficient if persons are assigned for each task ahead.

Once the meeting time was set thru a poll in the group chat, everyone was able to attend and participate in the meeting. There we brainstorm possible themes and topics by laying out all of our ideas. After which, we have voted on what theme to pursue and have discussed roles and responsibilities regarding the activity. All in all, the team communicated effectively by reaching out to one another and treating the team as a safe space to provide information and suggestions.

What went well and how can it be improved?

Something that really went well was the team’s ability to adapt to each other despite our differences. In terms of points for improvement, several team members could have been more participative rather than being passive when the discussions towards the activity were made.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

Reflective practice allows a professional to be a better healthcare provider. It encourages a professional to contemplate about themselves, their clients, colleagues, more importantly, their actions. All of which are vital in ensuring quality healthcare is given by knowing what was done well and what needs to be improved. In essence, reflective practice can be considered as a crucial foundation for it enforces an individual to do a maintenance check towards their professional life which is important to continue thriving towards excellence. There are several skills needed to reflect on practice, such as introspection, description, critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and action. However, I consider introspection, critical analysis, and intervention to be paramount for reflective practice. Since introspection allows an individual to be aware of themselves and their environment. Next, by critically reflecting on the components of the said situation we can better understand what happened and think of possible areas to improve. Lastly, intervention is key for its absence would mean your reflection was unproductive.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

The Conscious Competence Learning Model has drawn my attention out of all the models presented. This is due to the fact that as a student now, I highly relate to it. Given that it shows what I have been experiencing here in CRS. More specifically, it is a reflection of a professional journey particularly on how a college student can be a competent healthcare provider in the future. It has given me a new outlook to see that challenges experienced now would lead me to be a qualified and proficient therapist. The model can be applied in my future practice by taking into consideration that small steps are worth celebrating. I must not be hesitant in trying out new things for learning is done when you go out of your comfort zone.

She encouraged us to participate by sharing our ideas, and then voted on the concept in whcih we all agree to do. We were then divided into 3 groups with at least 3 students each where tasks were delegated. Per group, we communicated through facebook messenger to monitor each of our progresses. As a whole group, we also communicated trough our group chat to clarify some questions and guidelines.

What went well and how can it be approved?
Our internal deadlines were followed as each group were able to finish there tasks on time. It serves as a guide for us to be able to focus on the objectives and create a harmonious output. (Now what) With this, it can be said that our experience can be used in our future, as healthcare professionals, because clear communication is vital in our practice.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice

As future healthcare practitioners, thinking about our practice would help us enhance our abilities. Being aware of one’s own skills allows us to adapt to the circumstances at hand. This allows us to focus on our strengths while improving on our flaws. The following are the abilities or skills needed for the reflection:

INTROSPECTION helps us to recognize our own limitations, strengths, and flaws. It allows the individual to examine their sentiments and their impact on the circumstance, and vice versa. It is essentially a process of self-examination through personal observation.

DESCRIPTION is the capacity to offer an accurate explanation of what occured or happened that caused the problem.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS is the capacity to evaluate the components of a situation and inspect the factors that are involved in the problem. This is the ability to determine the source of a problem or issue.

SYNTHESIS is a skill that allows new infornamtion to be integrated with current knowledge. It is the capacity to combine multiple data into a single cohesive notion.

EVALUATION entails making judgements about something anf determining if one approach is superior to another. It assesses the circumstance to determine the best course of action.

ACTION is the ability to choose how to handle an intervention. It entails putting the plan into action once it has ben rigorously examined and produced through critical thinking and review.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

Borton’s Development Framework is my model of choice. This is becuase the model itself is straightforward and easier to understand. It allows me to think critically in unforseen situations especially if I am to work in a clinical setting. The model also enables me to make sense of the problem presented to me through contemplation. The “what” question in the model helps me determine the problem to be tackled. Next, the “so what” question allows me to think the significance of what I identified in the “what” portion. I should be able to correlate it with regards to the people involved. Lastly, this will require me to take action or to carry out a plan to achieve the goal or to address the problem that was presented.

How did the team communicate?

Using our Messenger group chat, our LO made a poll for us to choose a date and time for the PLA3 meeting. We have 3 parts and created 3 separate group chats for easy communication and monitoring of tasks.

What went well and how can it be improved?

Despite coming from different programs, I saw that the team’s communication and collaboration have improved considerably as compared to the previous activities that we did. Our LO was proactive in initiating meetings and very encouraging to the members to share their ideas and thoughts. The team was cooperative in suggesting ideas and voting for the main concept of the video, and everyone’s time was considered in setting internal deadlines. Activeness of some members during meetings could have been improved, but overall, teamwork and communication within the team went well.

Use the What?

How did the team communicate?

To better facilitate the planning for our required submission, the group opted to use zoom to be able to meet with each member to gather ideas and opinions on how to best tackle the task. The team was able to communicate effectively by providing valuable input that would help in the completion of the task. We brainstormed ideas on how to creatively present our assigned theme. Afterward, we made a consensus which was agreed upon by the majority of the group members then we equally distributed the task based on everyone's preference and strengths. Other concerns were relayed as well through our group chat as we seek to clarify any issues that the group may have.

What went well and how can it be improved?

In the entirety of the process, the group was able to meet and accomplish the assigned tasks on time. Even though we barely know the qualities, strengths, and weaknesses of each member of the group, we were able to adapt effectively in order to accomplish the task that we need to do. Furthermore, some of the members were very vocal in giving out ideas that enable the group to move at a quicker phase. However, not all members were able to participate actively during the brainstorming in which case I think there is still some form of nervousness with some members to openly speak up with their ideas. Thus, I think this aspect can be improved further to establish better communication in the group.

Use the What? So what? Now what? Reflection model by Rolfe et al (2001)

WHAT:
During our group meeting, we were able to gather a lot of ideas and suggestions on how to best approach the making of the video. Some of which I did not clearly understand thus giving me some form of doubts about the outcome of our work. Especially since I was assigned as the scriptwriter and knowing that my skills may not be up to the standard that the group is looking for makes it more difficult for me to take into perspective the ideas that they presented.

SO WHAT:
As we are working as a group, I realized that a lot of people have their own idea and style in doing things. Thus, it was a challenge for me to adapt to their way of thinking especially since a lot of ideas were being put into the work.

NOW WHAT:
All potential concerns and issues must be expressed by the group in order to avoid any sort of confusion on the things that they are supposed to do. As a member of the group, I should speak up more about my lack of understanding of how to go about the task in order to do better in the things that I was assigned. However, as of the moment, I believe that the group is moving at the correct pace such that we are able to accomplish the necessary things that we need to do.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

Reflecting on our practice enables us to create critical solutions to the problems that are present to us in our profession. This allows us to better hone our skills by learning from our past experiences and applying them to our current practice in order to provide the best possible outcome for our patients. There are different skills that are necessary for a professional in order to reflect on practice. First, should develop self-awareness/ introspection because it allows them to identify their own strength and weaknesses which would help in improving their practice as professionals. Second, they should be able to describe accurately what has transpired that potentially caused the problem. Third, they should be able to critically analyze in order for them to discern the factors that caused the problem. Lastly, they should be able to synthesize, evaluate, and put into action the learnings that they gathered from the past and apply the best possible solution by proper evaluation before it is applied into current practice.

2. This particular model emphasizes describing first what is the problem, followed by reflecting upon it, and finally thinking of strategies to improve upon it. This can be applied in my future practice by allowing me to reflect on what role I had in the problem and what actions I can take to better improve myself based on those actions. Furthermore, it would allow me to establish a deeper realization of my own self as I strive to further develop as a professional. Additionally, it will allow me to realize what steps I can take to further improve by highlighting areas that I may have problems with.

The group is also very understanding of the situation of others and tries to offer help to anyone struggling.

What was the outcome?

Because of the comfortable environment and support that our group has, the members are at ease that we will always have good teamwork, make good quality outputs, and submit these outputs on time. A lot of my group members contribute really great insights and we trust that whatever decisions the group makes, will be for the best of our outputs. We also learn from each other, as well as from the mistakes that we had from our previous works, and we apply these learnings to our next works.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

I believe reflective practice is the foundation to professional development. As healthcare professionals, we should always reflect on our practice because we will have different experiences and we should use those experiences as opportunities to learn and improve our knowledge and skills. The following are the skills needed for reflective practice:

Self-awareness / Introspection: we must be aware of our own strengths and limitations

Description: we must be able to provide an account of what happened

Critical Analysis: we must be able to examine the components of the event

Synthesis: we must be able to integrate new knowledge with our current ones and form a single idea from different perspectives, experiences, and literature

Evaluation: we must be able to make judgement through the use of appropriate criteria and resources to best implement the action

Action / Intervention: we must be able to decide whether and how we will implement the action

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

My favorite model of reflective practice is Borton’s Developmental Framework. It is short and straightforward, that’s why it is easy to understand and apply to practice. This framework allows me to reflect on my practice by first identifying (WHAT) the situation or problem and recalling what I did during that situation. Second (SO WHAT), it allows me to think about the significance of my actions, how did these actions affect the situation, and what are my thoughts and feelings during the event. Lastly (NOW WHAT), it allows me to make sense of my experiences and come-up with actions that will help me deal with similar situations more effectively in the future.

1. Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

- We should reflect on practice in order for us to know what are our strengths and weaknesses and how we can improve better as healthcare professionals. Reflecting on practice makes us more aware of our actions and enables us to make more careful decisions about our plans for the patient. The skills needed to reflect on practice include: critical analysis, synthesis, self-awareness, action-intervention, evaluation, and description.

2. What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?
- A very easy to understand model of reflective practice would be Borton’s Developmental Framework. It covers three steps: What, So What, Now What. As simple as it may seem, the model included all the necessary components for reflection. In practice, you always have to be present in the situation. First, be aware of what went wrong and what caused that situation to happen. Was it because of the lack of stimulation? Was it because you weren’t able to take note of the client’s behavioral issues? Second, deepen your reflection by asking yourself what made you do the action. Was it because this is what you saw other clinicians do? Was it because you wanted the easy way? Third, decide on what you can do to prevent the situation from happening again. Would you introduce new reinforcements? Would you change the activity based on the client’s interests?

We then went into breakout rooms then discussed each case individually.

· What went well and how can it be improved?

It was successful because everyone collaborated well together without any dispute, we all clicked and worked well enough a. We were able to come up with a single cohesive concept since each team member contributed to the planning process. We had to select what kind of movie we should film for the PLA 3 when we were completing it. Different ideas were proposed from various sources, and I was perplexed as to how these concepts would work given the video's goal.

So what?

It's critical to take the initiative so that members may show that you're willing to work together. I discovered that each member of my group has a unique viewpoint and understanding of how to produce high-quality results. As a group member, I must respect all suggestions proposed by my peers, as it is clear that we do not share the same perspectives on the best type of video to make.

Now what?

The group's current method of meeting and completing work was satisfactory. We may notice distinct perspectives from each practice and how they interact with our own. More importantly, I would make an effort to comprehend their condition and worries.

How did the team communicate?

The team communicated via zoom & google docs and I found that quite efficient. I came to this conclusion, because we managed to share our suggestions and thoughts for our output and we were able to finalize as to what approach we were going to use and the delegation of tasks. We had a brain dump in our docs that allowed everyone, even those who were shy to speak up, to write their ideas. From there, we voted as to which approach would be best and feasible for PLA3. We also set deadlines so that we may present quality outputs.

What went well and how can it be improved?

Our communication was efficient to the point that we were able to finish our meeting at an early hour. During this meeting, we managed to talk about both PLA 3 and 4 and set internal deadlines for both projects that considered all members’ schedules. I believe it can be further improved by constant communication even outside of meetings. We can check on each other’s progress so that we know if we are behind schedule or not.

Use the What? So what? Now what? Reflection model by Rolfe et al (2001)

What: Communication is essential in accomplishing group tasks. Sometimes, there was dead air because no one was speaking. I believe it is because we are not as comfortable yet and some are just generally shy to tell their ideas. There were also members who were not able to attend due to prior commitments. Although it could’ve been scheduled on different day, there is an issue of time constraint and contrasting schedules.

So What: From that, I learned that even if people are too shy to speak up, there are other means to share ideas such as providing a brain dump where you can type whatever you want for the project. Furthermore, I also learned that as long as the absent members are kept informed, they are willing to contribute their ideas even outside the meeting.

Now What: Overall, the group’s has a very efficient way of gathering ideas from members. Everyone was cooperative and willing to follow the group’s decision. However, I would prefer that our group would eventually be comfortable with one another to the point of treating them as close friends. Moreover, sometimes, it is best to step out of our shell, because our ideas may be the key to make a quality output

Hence, being able to designate people to tasks with the same difficulty as others is necessary. When there were differences in opinions, I made sure that I would listen to their concerns first before explaining as to how I decided the assignment of roles. I also made sure that we communicated with the whole group so that I could hear everybody’s suggestions and thoughts. If the majority agreed to an idea brought up by a team member, then we would do just that. I wanted to make sure that there was a democracy within our team, because it makes everybody feel that they are heard and that their opinions have the same weight as others when it comes to decision-making.

Is there any specific sub-competency applicable to the situation?

I believe the sub-competency of developing a trusting relationship with other members is applicable to the situation.

1. Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

A healthcare provider's performance can be improved through reflective practice. It motivates people to consider themselves, their clients, their coworkers, and, most importantly, their actions towards the goal of their practice. All of these elements are important in ensuring high-quality healthcare by assessing what worked well and what may be enhanced. In summary, reflective practice can be considered a vital foundation since it compels an individual to perform a thorough inspection on their professional life, which is required to keep advancing toward excellence. Introspection, description, critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and action are some of the skills needed to reflect on practice. In my opinion, reflective practice necessitates reflection, critical analysis, and intervention. Because it allows a person to become more aware of themselves and their surroundings through reflection. In my opinion, reflective practice demands reflection, and critical analysis. Because it allows a person to become more aware of themselves and their surroundings through introspection. But here are all the skills needed to properly reflect on practice:

- Introspection: assists us in seeing our own shortcomings, talents, and weaknesses. It allows the person to evaluate their feelings and how they affect the situation, and vice versa. It's simply a method of self-reflection based on personal observation.

- Description: is the ability to provide a detailed account of what occurred or occurred that resulted in the situation.

- Critical Analysis: The ability to examine the components of a situation and inspect the aspects that are involved in the problem is known as CRITICAL ANALYSIS. This is the ability to figure out what's causing a problem or issue.

- Synthesis: The capacity to blend new information with previous knowledge is known as Synthesis. It's the ability to combine disparate pieces of data into a single coherent concept.

- Evaluation: is the process of deciding on a course of action and assessing if one technique is superior than another. It assesses the circumstance before determining the best course of action.

- Action: refers to the ability to select how to respond to an intervention. It entails putting the strategy into action once it has been thoroughly evaluated and refined through critical thinking and assessment.

2. What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

I believe that Borton's Developmental Framework should be used as the model of reflective practice and in which the significant model that drew my attention. This strategy emphasizes articulating the problem first, then commenting on it, and finally considering ways to improve it. This may be used in my future practice by helping me to reflect on my role in the situation and what measures I can take to improve myself based on those acts, and it is simple to understand and apply to practice. The framework enables me to focus on my practice by first recognizing the circumstance or problem (What?) and then recalling what I did in that situation this serves as a backtracking form which is useful for my chosen field. Second (So What?), this part of the model allows me to reflect on the significance of my actions, how they influenced the situation, and what my thoughts and feelings were at the time if they were appropriate or not. Finally (Now What?), this part of the model then enables me to make sense of my experiences and devise strategies for dealing with similar circumstances more effectively in the future.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

Reflective practice provides an opportunity for a medical professional to achieve his/her utmost potential. It allows an individual to assess their strengths and weaknesses which in turn could provide oneself awareness on what needs to be improved and what is needed to be maintained. Various skills are needed to reflect on practice, including introspection, description, critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation and action. Introspection or self-awareness allows us to acknowledge what we have and what we don’t have. We see our limitations and how it affects how we provide healthcare. Description involves being able to rundown what may have happened that could have caused the problem. Critical analysis, on the other hand, delves in deeper to identify what particular variable caused the problem. Next, synthesis is the ability to integrate new information in our current body of knowledge. Evaluation is the ability to assess which approach is best suited for the current situation. Lastly, action is the ability to execute plans that have been rigorously analyzed.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

I particularly like Borton’s Developmental Framework since I find it simple and very straight to the point. Answering the question “what?” would help us identify the problem. “So What?” would help us see a bigger and clearer picture so that we can know what exactly went wrong. Lastly, “Now What?” would answer how we can improve so that we can resolve the situation. This model can be applied in my future practice especially when I’m giving PT interventions to my patient. If I see that an intervention is not effective, it is time to identify the problem, reflect on what contributed to the problem, and create a plan that would resolve the problem.

Reflect on the importance of communication and teamwork in your own IPE group after completing PLA3.

1. How did the team communicate?

We communicated through an online platform which is Zoom and exchanged ideas in the application for almost an hour. Everyone suggested their insights during the brainstorming part of the group on how we will be able to come up with interesting content and at the same time everybody agrees. We also used our group chat on another platform, messenger, in exchanging ideas also. We sent sample videos in order to gather ideas for the output of this activity. Basically, we communicated through online platforms which helped our mindset to be connected. After gathering the ideas shared by everyone, we need to come up with combined ideas and one concept for our final output. We did it in an electoral process where the idea that has the majority votes will be chosen.

2. What went well and how can it be improved?

The communication went well and everybody agrees with what has been voted during the process. It can be improved maybe when face to face classes start where all of us can have specific time to gather and be at one place. In times like this, where our mode of communication is through online, sometimes it’s exhausting and not everybody can actively participate.

3. Use the What? So what? Now what? Reflection model by Rolfe et al (2001)

WHAT?

From what I observed, communication is very important when it comes to having a collaboration with other people. In line with communication is teamwork. These practices are vital especially with our professions which are in the medical field. In times of miscommunication, what can resolve this is through dialogue or through communication itself. That’s how important communication is, it solves its own problem.

SO WHAT?

These observations and learnings on this activity made my eyes open to what is happening right now. Communication and teamwork are key in resolving issues not only personally but with other aspects of life. As an aspiring Occupational therapist, I will be needing these practices in my future clients, co-workers, and the whole organization. Having an effective way of communicating with other members of the group, society, or community, can have a great impact on the success of the whole.

NOW WHAT?

In order for me to apply this learning to my future self, I need to instill these things in order for me to bring them in my forthcoming practices. This allowed efficiency such that when the other group members are done with submitting their own videos, it would take less time to compile and edit the final video. I also gave out mini edits of the video so that I would know the feedback of my group on the video. Unfortunately, my fellow video editor was not able to contribute to the editing process thus I had to report to the LO of my group

Is there any specific sub-competency applicable to the situation? I believe that the sub competency, maintainin competence in one's own profession appropriate to scope of practice, is applicable to this situation.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice? To reflect on your practice is essential if we want to grow as a future healthcare provider. Further improving your abilities and performance can only be made through being reflective of what you do. The skills that are needed to be able to reflect on your practice are introspection, description, critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and action.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice? Personally, my favorite model of reflective practice is the Gibb's reflective cycle. I relate very much to Gibb's reflective model such that it basically sums up how I've gotten to where I am now. I relate especially to the question in the reflective cycle, "what were you thinking and feeling?". Most of my failures in the past were due to me having moments of mindlessness and carelessness. I deeply regret some of those mistakes where I could have made the right choice but my involuntary actions superseded me. Now that I reflect on my actions more often, I've been able to accomplish more things while also cutting down on careless mistakes.

How did the team communicate?

Our communication on the activity began when the LO made a poll so we can set a meeting date. During the meeting, we contributed our own ideas. The LO made sure to call all members in an orderly manner to ensure that all our ideas are heard and that everyone in the group participates in the discussion. We also made a word document where we can dump our ideas. Then, those who contributed major ideas elaborated on what they wrote. Since there were too many ideas, we decided to merge and remove some. Afterward, we voted on the idea that we like most. Once we had our final idea, we discussed its structure and the roles and responsibilities of each member. We then set an internal deadline per part. The subgroups had their own group chats where they communicated their ideas. Then, we just relayed the new ideas or changes we had to the whole group. Our communication went smoothly since everyone was invested in the activity and we respected each member's ideas.

What went well and how can it be improved?

One of the aspects that made our meeting go well was that the members were active in sharing their ideas. The LO also did a great job in managing and directing the discussion. We were all interested in the activity which made our meeting efficient. Also, there were no judgmental members since we all respected each other's ideas. To further improve our communication, we can update each other on our progress in our group chat as this will help us keep the flow going.

Use the What? So what? Now what?

How did the team communicate?

First, through messenger, the group decided when will be the best time to have a meeting to discuss the task. During the meeting, I can say that the team communicated effectively, since everyone was able to contribute ideas. Afterwards, all the ideas were collated in the google docs file and were voted upon by all members of the team. The delegation and assignment of task, and the setting of deadlines were done during the meeting. After the meeting, the team still ensured proper communication, since we created our own group chats based on our assignments.

What went well and how can it be improved?

Personally, I think the interprofessional communication of the team in this task was good, since we were able to pass the requirements on time, while still ensuring quality output. However, the team encountered one minor setback during the process – it was when the video output exceeded the time limit. I think the communication between the script writers, actors, and video editors should be improved to ensure that the contents of the script can fit within the time limit; hence, avoiding re-filming or re-editing the clips. Nevertheless, the team was able to address this problem effectively and efficiently.

Use the What? So what? Now what? Reflection model by Rolfe et al (2001)

What: We were given a task in our IPE course, and each of us played a role in accomplishing it. Our goal was to collaborate and communicate effectively with one another despite our differences to be able to submit the requirements on time while ensuring quality output.

So what: Since we were required to create a video output regarding the importance of interprofessional communication in health-allied students, we were able to learn something from the activity while we were doing our research. Hence, this could further contribute to our communication skills between our groupmates, our classmates, our teachers, and eventually, our patients.

Now what: We should be able to apply our learnings from the activity to our everyday lives. Utilizing good communication skills as early as now will further help us instill these skills within us, which would be beneficial when we are already handling actual patients in the clinic. Since medical errors are common with miscommunication, we should already know the importance of interprofessional communication, and apply it in our lives.

Key takeaways from team dynamics and behaviors
Before having a conference or meeting, all members of the team should be on the same page; otherwise, they may be too preoccupied during the discussion. It can be seen in the videos that not all members were actively listening and paying interest to what the others have to say. Team members should not only value their own opinions, but also those from the other members of the team, since the patient will benefit most from a multidisciplinary approach.

Describe a time when you have been part of a team in which differences of opinions developed about how the work was assigned or completed.

What was your role?

I am a member from group 9 - 3PTB. During this semester, I was able to collaborate with other students from different sections. Since we came from different groups, the way how we do our written or case reports sometimes significantly varies from each other.

What actions did you make?

First, I asked them how they usually do their written reports, and if there is a reason why they follow such format. Upon knowing their answers, I try to be open-minded and understand that we have different ways of doing things. Afterwards, I have realized that there is nothing wrong with the format they use, and I am just not used to it. Therefore, I adapted to the changes that were made and suggested ideas as well as to how we could further improve our outputs.

Is there any specific sub-competency applicable to the situation?

The most appropriate sub-competence for this situation would be the need to “embrace the cultural diversity and individual differences that characterize the healthcare team.” As future healthcare professionals, we should be able to work with individuals who practices things differently in a non-judgmental way. If we believe that there is nothing wrong with what they do, we should be open-minded and respect their ways of doing things.

What was the outcome?

The group was able to agree upon a the most efficient and presentable way of writing case reports. Now, we use this template in all our outputs. Since we used a simpler and more formal template, it allowed each of us to easily see and read the contents of the report.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

Reflective practice is essential, especially in the healthcare setting, as it allows professionals to critically and deliberately think, in order to gain a deeper understanding of oneself, others, and the meaning that is shared among individuals. By applying reflective practice we can objectively evaluate our actions and continuously develop better practices; hence, preventing stagnation and ensuring excellence in the things we do. By applying reflective practice, we can provide a means for constructing professional knowledge. Considering all of this, we can improve not only the patient’s outcomes but also those of the team’s. However, certain skills are needed to be able to effectively reflect on practice:

· Self-awareness / introspection: We should be able to analyze the effect of our feelings on the situation, and how the situation affects our emotions and decisions.

· Description: We should be able to accurately report what happened in a particular situation.

· Critical analysis: We should be able to examine all the elements involved in our actions and/or mistakes.

· Synthesis: We should be able to integrate new knowledge from previous knowledge to form a single coherent idea.

· Evaluation: We should be able to evaluate all the factors needed for the appropriate action.

· Action / intervention: The appropriate action must take place for the benefit of the patient and the team.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

My favorite model of reflective practice was Borton’s Developmental Framework. I think this framework allows the individual to dissect the scenario to be able to learn from mistakes in the healthcare setting, since it looks at the problem itself, the role of the individual, the results of the individual’s actions, and the interventions that should have been done. In the future, if I were to be involved in an incident, I would ask these three questions to myself: What? So what? Now what? I should be able to identify the problem itself, my responsibilities as part of the healthcare team, and the consequences of my actions to the incident. Afterwards, I would reflect and analyze on what happened to be able to correct my mistakes in the future.

Why should we reflect on practice? What skills are needed to reflect on practice?

As a professional, we must always strive for excellence not just in theoretical knowledge but also in the way we act towards our clients and other healthcare professionals as well as to certain events. To do this, we must continually look back on our actions and think of how we can do better the next time a similar scenario occurs again. This will help us decide our course of action better and become better professionals.

The skills needed for reflection are introspection, description, critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and action. All of these are important but I feel that the most important are synthesis and action. Oftentimes, people think that reflection just means looking back on a certain scenario. However, it also involves analyzing and making sense out of what happened. With synthesis, we are able to connect our past experiences to our present as we are integrating new knowledge to our current knowledge. As for action, we should always follow up our realizations and learnings with action steps as application of our reflection.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

My favorite model of reflective practice is Gibbs's Reflective Cycle. I like is because unlike other models, it validates our feelings. It stresses the importance of accepting that something is wrong before we can truly reflect. Also, it's cyclic nature shows that there is always something more to learn even after doing the action plan. Another thing I like about it is that it directly tells us to think about the good and the bad in the situation. I can apply this model in my future practice by learning to face the truth that some things went wrong even though it may be hard to accept. Lastly, it can help me develop a habit of looking at things objectively by realizing that there are good and bad points in every situation.

Professional standards and credentialing processes to demonstrate continuing competence for most health professionals now require demonstrations of reflection or reflective practice. According to Atkins & Murphy (1994), the skills required of reflective practice are self awareness, description, critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

What’s your favorite model of reflective practice? How can you apply this model in your future practice?

My favorite model is the Reflection-in-action. This is the reflection that takes place whilst you are involved in the situation, often a patient interaction. It also involves using analysis of observation, listening and/or touch or ‘feel’ to problem solve. It therefore sounds a lot like clinical reasoning – where reflection differs is that the problem solving leads to a change in the practitioner’s view of self, values and beliefs. As a future Occupational Therapist, a healthcare provider, this model will help me throughout my journey in providing and catering the services of all my clients about their occupations. The skills of this model will help me to achieve my goal to provide the best possible intervention to my future clients as this model is a patient interaction.

References:

Southern Cross University (2021).
