This year, first grade teachers implemented the Reading Units of Study (without a mandate and at the same time as Letterland!). There were complaints and grumblings at the beginning of the year and by MOY, one of the teachers that was in most resistance expressed at one PLC how glad she was we had been doing the units. This week, at their literacy meeting on Tuesday, the team has decided that they will also implement the Writing Units of Study next year!! All without a mandate!

Collaboration with 3rd grade to change enrichment from Lucy Caulkins extensions to Genius Hour is working out very well. 3rd graders are much more engaged in the work. They are learning how to use search engines to do effective research, how to skim large volumes of information for the specific details they are looking for and to discriminate between useful information and extraneous facts. They are also learning how to keep up with sources and to organize their information into sections with a main idea and supporting details. I am pleased with their increased level of engagement and confident that this experience will help them with non-fiction reading and writing and research in the coming years.

Also, they are elaborating more in their reasoning in unpacking their evidence and their rationale. This is also impacting the instruction in the other 7+ class because I now plan with her to develop the plans for all of the 7+ students. I have been very intentional with the materials that I offer to them and helping them stretch their thinking with extensions for the skills that they teach . I am also supporting the students in one of the 6th grade "bubble" math classes by working with small groups that have been targeted for higher level work using the class exit tickets and assessments. In English 1, I am co-teaching with the teacher and we are collaboratively designing lessons and activities to target the skills/standards for the 4th quarter while spiraling back to review previously taught information as well.
