This article is a fabulous assertion from the seminal works of Cooper and Harris to Vatterott and Dueck. Vatterott and Dueck are also big on formative feedback and "Rethinking Grading" practices. I feel this article is spot on with how homework needs to be structured for all students. The research about homework and students in poverty is important to recognize. However, what they're advocating is good practice for all and how grading and homework should be utilized. Connie Hamilton, Author of Hacking Homework Tweeted this awhile ago. "If students can use a pass to not do homework, what does that say about its value for learning?"...Very thought provoking

Most powerful line in the article is "homework should reinforce a student's confidence in their abilities, not shatter it." Article certainly gives a perspective that we must consider at all levels!!

I would like to evaluate why teachers are giving homework in the first place. Is it because they are reinforcing student learning or is it because they are so overwhelmed with how much content they are required to teach that they feel the only way to cover such content is through homework?

I agree with most of what the article says - however; a lot of the research was done in VERY low income districts. We are not in a very low income district. These districts don't have one on one initiatives, etc. Some of it is apples and oranges in my opinion.

I agree that homework may not be the number priority in a household that is struggle with daily essentials of living. Also is homework graded upon the learning process or compliance?

Homework should be graded if it is purposeful practice of a skill that has been taught and mastered in the classroom. However, graded homework should not be weighted the same as assignments that are more task oriented; such as, covering a book or bringing in index cards.
