This song shows the dissonance between immigrants and typical American society. They may feel pressured to conform and this may lead to insecurity when faced with different American standards. The singer in this song is experiencing this turmoil and by the end of the song she accepts her family and her differences. Mitski also uses the art form of music to connect to her mother and be happy with herself. This relates to the theme of the poem through art connecting generations and immigrant families facing a new environment.
