He constantly battles with his deep understanding of animalistic ideals: “Richard Parker turned and started clawing… his rear legs began tearing at its stomach and back” (Martel 278). Richard Parker, a powerful beast trained in hunting, uses his entire body clawing, biting, and kicking all at the same time. Though he has incredible power he does not understand the ocean nearly as much as Pi, someone who has been taught the basic functions of the world, does. Richard Parker is unaware while fighting the shark that it cannot hear him. During the fight with the mako, Richard Parker “opened his mouth wide and full-out roared” (Martel 277), rattling Pi's bones as it was released. This is often used as an intimidation strategy for big cats during their hunts; but, in this case the shark is “deaf, conventionally speaking”(Martel 277) meaning the mako “perceived only a dull vibration”(Martel 278). Richard Parker’s use of a roar as an intimidation tactic is unhelpful due to the deafness of a shark.
