Cheat, scam, Dirtyhands, Bastard of the Barrel. All these titles belong to the one and only Kaz Brekker. It wasn't always like this though. Brekker came here with his brother, Jordie. Jordie and Kaz had come to start a new life in the Barrel, a bad part of Ketterdam. They'd met a man who sold them out. He tricked them out of there money and left. Jordie fell ill and Kaz did too. They shouldn't have survived. Jordie didn't. Kaz did. The sick were put on a small raft and sent out to sea to a place called Reapers Barge, where they sent the dead who couldn't afford to be buried. Kaz had healed and used Jordies body as a flotation device to get back to shore. From this moment on, Kaz snapped. He became tough and ditched his last name and came up with Brekker from the side of a machine. He dedicated the rest of his life to try hunting down the man who wronged him and Jordie, Pekka Rollins.

Bo Yul-Bayur has discovered a way to enhance Grishas powers. Jurda Parem is a type of drug that will send Grisha into a power hungry state that can leave them emotionally, physically, and mentally exausted and sick. These highs last about an hour and these Grisha will obey anyone who gives them the parem. The Drüskelle are trying to make Grisha weapons with parem. Bo Yul-Bayur is later discovered to be dead. His son Kuwei Yul-Bayur is alive and well but hasn't perfected the fromula. He's still able to make Jurda Parem but it won't work all the time.

Setting

In Six of Crows there are two main settings, Ketterdam and Fjerda. These settings are divided into more places. Ketterdam has a part of town called the Barrel which is like the ghetto. The Barrel is a place filled with thugs, thieves, and gangs. Within the Barrel there are businesses such as the White Rose that take slaves and force them to do work. The women they enslave are beat if they don't follow orders. Then there is Fjerda, home of the Drüskelle that believe the Grisha are evil and unnatural. They kill Grisha if found guilty (None have been found not guilty, shocker). The Drüskelle stay near the Ice Court if they aren't off capturing Grisha. The Ice Court is an impenetrable prision. They you have a cheery little town next to the Ice Court called Djerholm. Djerholm is a happy town that lives with constant snow because of where they are.

Dynamic Character

Matthias is a dynamic character. In the story he changes multiple ways. The first way is that he starts the story feeling betrayed by Nina. She had claimed him a slaver and he was sent to Hellgate. She only did this because her commander was watching. If she was seen leaving with him, she would be hunted and killed. He never understood why and had held a grudge against her. He literally chocked her when she went to Hellgate to save him. In the end he ended up the way he was in the flashbacks shared with us that happened before the story, in love with Nina. Matthias also used to be a loyal Drüskelle, however, Nina had made him discover that not all Grisha are bad. He ended up betraying his commander, Brum. He betrayed Brum to save Nina, further developing their love.

Conflict - Character v.s. Character

Through out the story, we are hinted at Kaz's background, as well as many of the other characters. We are told that Kaz used to have a brother and he and his brother moved to the Barrel to start a new life (see Protagonist) We figure out that Pekka Rollins has scammed Jordie and Kaz out of their small fortune. This allowed them to not be able to afford a cure for Jordie and he died of sickness. Kaz has devoted his life to hunting down this man. The only thing that keeps Kaz from just killing Rollins is not skill, but instead he wants to watch Rollins suffer. "Brick by brick" is often used by Kaz to keep him from kill Rollins when he gets the chance. Rollins has no idea what he did but Kaz remembers very vividly, using Jordies body to get back to shore.

Resolution

The resolution in Six of Crows is near the end where Kaz and the crew go to collect their prize of 30 million krudge. They are not given the krudge and are attacked instead. Wylan is able to learn the truth about how his father, Van Eck, truly thinks of him. He thought Wylan was on the boat and ordered to have it crushed. Inej was knocked out and taken. Van Eck leaves with the krudge demanding he gets Kuwei by a certian date, or he'll kill Inej. The books sequel is being worked on as we speak, so there is no solution to the new conflict, however the old conflict, stopping Jurda Parems production, was solved.
