These include:

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples;
Indigenous peoples;
Australian Indigenous Peoples; and,
First Peoples.
Genevieve Grieves (2020, p. 17), in talking about the diversity of Indigenous Australia, notes:

There is a range of First Peoples communities across urban, regional and remote Australia. This continent is a rich tapestry of over 250 different nations that have their own law, arts, culture, and language and their own experiences of colonization.

Grieves uses ‘the term “First Peoples” rather than “Aboriginal or “Indigenous” as it is the preferred term in the community (Melbourne) where I live.’ She continues:

“Aboriginal” is a generic term that does not reflect our sovereignty or diversity: ‘Indigenous’ is also generic but does connect the mainland to the Torres Strait Islands and our struggles and experience with groups in other countries who also consider themselves “Indigenous” (p.17).  

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples” is the formal, collective term for all people who identify and are recognized as descendants of the original inhabitants of Australia. This collective term is generally used in government and institutional policy and discourse.

It is also acceptable to refer to each separately in the correct context of referring to a distinct group as separate from the other.

Aboriginal Australians or Aboriginal peoples; and
Torres Strait Islanders or Torres Strait Islander peoples
It is important to acknowledge that Indigenous peoples of the Torres Strait Islands have a separate linguistic and cultural identity to Aboriginal people. It is not appropriate to use the word “Aboriginal” to include Torres Strait Islander peoples.  There may be occasions to refer to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples collectively. Acceptable terms are:

Indigenous Australians;
Australian Indigenous peoples; and,
Indigenous peoples.
The use of the term Indigenous is one that could be used when referring generally to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a proper noun “Indigenous” is always capitalized in this context.

While there is no definitive term to refer to Australia’s First Peoples, all of the above terms are acceptable.

Other collective names can be acceptable in the correct context and usually refer to geographic identity. In Victoria, for example, you will hear the use of the term ‘Koorie’ to refer to Aboriginal peoples from the southern-eastern coast. Other names denote ancestry and culture groups, for example, Yorta Yorta. There are also local names for Victorian Aboriginal peoples’ language groups, for example, East Kulin language names include Woiwurrung, Boonwurrung, Taungarung, Wathaurong and Dja Dja Wurrung. Other names that may be appropriate and you may hear throughout Australia include Murri (Qld, northwest NSW); Nyoongah (WA); Koori (NSW); Goori (mind-north and northern NSW); Yolngu (Arnhem Land); Anangu (Central Australia); Palawa (Tasmania); Murray Island Peoples; and Mer Island Peoples. Whereas in northern Western Australia people only refer to themselves based on their belonging to certain language groups, e.g. Yawuru, Kija, etc.

These names are appropriate in context but can change over time so make sure you consult the local people. All terms should always be capitalized and written in full.

The use of ‘ATSI’ people is not acceptable as it is considered offensive and homogenizes the cultural diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by implying it is one group. Human beings should never be referred to by an acronym.

Use of the word ‘Aboriginal’ as a stand-alone descriptive noun should be avoided. Acceptable use is when is used as an attributive adjective, such as in the Aboriginal Education Unit. The word ‘Aboriginals’ is grammatically incorrect and should not be used in any context. ‘Aboriginal’ when referring to descendants of the original inhabitants of Australia should always be spelled with a capital ‘A’.

It can be appropriate to use a lower case “i” if you are referring to broad issues, such as “the global indigenous rights movement” or “indigenization”. Consider the context you are writing in carefully and confirm your terminology by cross-referencing or checking in a reputable source.

As First People’s we have a range of terms we acceptably use to refer to ourselves, this might include blackfulla, mob, Blak etc. The Aboriginal English terms ‘whitefella’, ‘blackfella’, and ‘mob’ are used by Indigenous Australian people all over the country. People should respect the acceptance and use of these terms and consult the local First People’s communities for further advice about their use.

The term ‘black’ has both positive and negative connotations. While it can signify solidarity, unity, and political activism against racism to various groups around the world, it has been used also to devalue and victimize people based on their skin color. Only use the term with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ consent.

Finally, use inclusive, rather than exclusive language (for example, ‘us’ and ‘them’). Consider who is excluded from the space when terms like ‘us’ and ‘them’ are used. Further, it is a good academic practice to be specific and name the population that you are referring to, rather than using ‘us’ or ‘them’.
