From the best of my knowledge my family is decendent from areas of Europe or North America. When filling out forms for my ethnicity would be Not Hispanic or Latino since myself and my family members have been from Europe or North America. I have distant relatives on my father's mother's side of the family who are Natvie American, from the Cherokee Tribe.

According to an article titled Appalachian Culture, "Traditional Appalachian culture is a real and functioning and revealed through arts and crafts, traditional music, traditional foods, customs and a somewhat common language. It is one that has been preserved mostly by families and churches and based on subsistence agriculture and hunting—not class-structured ways of existence." My fondest memories with my family are singing and playing bluegrass music, cooking traditional Appalachain foods such as chicken and dumplings, homemade biscuits, and stringing green beens and walking through my Grandpa's garden.

Some of the assumptions that come with those terms are uneducated, incest, and poverty. Just as any steroptype, those assumptions do not apply to every family and every situation. Geography and development plays a large role in these assumptions. The land is extremely mountaious and isolated.   1.  Every third Saturday in June the family gets together for the annual Family Reunion. Music is played, good food is eaten, and good fellowship is had with more than 100 people throughout the day. 
  2. The family gets together at a family member's house on Thanksgiving to eat the traditional meal. 
  3. On Christmas, each individual family will have Christmas morning in their own home and get together later on in the evening to celebrate together.

My Grandfather and Grandmother made sure that their children had more opportunities for employment through ensuring a better education for their children. I consider my upbrining based upon their traditions, beliefs and culture. I had minimal contact or relationships with my mother's family. My mother has passed down information about my Great Grandfather, Don Chafin, and his influential position in the local government and the impact he had on the communitiy of Logan, West Virginia.
