         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church was organized into a hierarchy with the pope at the top. Theoretically, the pope was superior to monarchs, meaning kings and queens could be excommunicated if they contravened the wishes of the pope. Being excommunicated by the pope, a person could not receive sacraments and was therefore thought to be damned to hell.  </div>]]></description>
