Surveillance in today’s society has to do mainly with time and perception compared to the surveillance in 1984 that has to do with the facet of society and being watched over. In today’s world, time is everything, monitoring the jobs and tasks we must do, every movement being recorded and spot on, and traces of where people walk, shop and talk at. In the article of What Does the Increased Surveillance mean for Our Society by the University of Gothenburg it says “the increased surveillance is associated with serious risks for fundamental democratic rights such as freedom of expression and privacy.” This surveillance of society today is more about privacy being invaded and history, records that are kept and saved throughout everyone’s life. Surveillance today also involves social media, for example Instagram, Facebook and Snacpchat are apps that are considered sensitive data. Nobody is really deeply aware of their data on the media that can possibly be collected and recorded for upon information on an individual. Today’s surveillance has been known to become more refined due to the amount of sharing information and large amounts of scale collections that analyze the data of a person.

“Book bans rising rapidly in US, free speech groups find,” By Alexandra Alter and 1984, Both the article and book highlights the suppression of ideas. In the novel the government controls information that's going to be on your books and in the real world book bans limit information resources. Both articles are warning about negative impact on civil liberties and importance of defending freedom in society. Ban of books is taking us forward to being a controlled society.

In Chino, California, the Chino Valley Unified School District has banned certain books. These books cover topics for being political, sexually explicit, or controversial. Marc Sternfield explains that reasons for banning educational material might include being inappropriate for certain ages, conflicting with community moral standards, or presenting one-sided political views. This situation is similar to George Orwell's "1984," where accessible educational resources are limited. In the society of “1984,” the government is totalitarian meaning everything is heavily controlled. Citizens are monitored with telescreens and microphones at all times. Their information is rewritten to fit the parties views which include books. Although this book ban in the Chino Valley Unified School District is not exactly the same as the one in “1989” it is similar.

The article attempts to ban books by Alexandra Alter states that 4,240 individual titles were targeted for removal from libraries which also like 1984 where they burn books and rewrite history. Tho also in 1984 The government restricts access to information, monitors the private lives of its citizens, and suppresses any ideas or actions that challenge its authority. Similarly, the phenomenon of book banning, the censorship of certain books or other forms of media by government bodies or other institutions, can be seen as a parallel to the control of information in "1984." The banning of books, often due to perceived offensive content or political disagreement, can restrict access to ideas and knowledge, limiting an individual's ability to form their own opinions and perspectives. For example in 1984 "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right." meaning they aren’t allowed to read old books and They won’t know the true history because everything old is rewritten and destroyed.

Surveillance in America is so similar to how surveillance is in 1984. For example, your search history. Your search history has almost everything, from your interests, questions; or websites that you visit like Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, and whatnot. In an article made by ACLU, the author expands on the idea.

The NSA, according to ACLU, obtains all communications from different social media companies like, for example, Microsoft, Instagram, Apple, and Google. They use companies like Verizon and AT&T to search through Americans' communication in bulk and search for key words. In 1984, they do almost the same thing. They look for keywords, certain body language, and things like language. But this expands on a wider scale.

The NSA, like the Party in 1984, makes a scapegoat group in order to be able to stalk through their own peoples communications. The Party uses the brotherhood and Goldstein. The NSA uses terrorists. The US government uses their power dangerously, and doesn't respect their own citizen's privacy, just like 1984.

The article, Book Bans Rising Rapidly in the U.S., Free Speech Groups Find made by Alexandra Alter on The New York Times and the book 1984 made by George Orwell both have books that are banned. In 1984 the book has books that are banned or destroyed due to the government. As well 1984 books has to be made by the Party so it can be published. In the article it talks about books that are banned in school districts in the U.S for censorship. The decision was made by the U.S government, they have banned about 4,000 books were removed that contained new reports, records and publicly available data. This quote proves the article and 1984 are both similar. Since the organization began tracking bans in July 2021, it has counted more than 4,000 instances of book removals using news reports, public records requests and publicly available data. This quote proves the article and 1984 are both similar. “Since the organization began tracking bans in July 2021, it has counted more than 4,000 instances of book removals using news reports, public records requests and publicly available data.” In conclusion the U.S are trying to ban books which is similar to the book 1984. Which in banning books the U.S could possibly end up how 1984 is with its government watching over us and controlling in what we see and learn, If the U.S keeps banning books.

Ximena A

One current event that resonates with Orwell’s “1984” is the ongoing debate surrounding government surveillance and privacy concerns, exemplified by controversies over mass surveillance programs like PRISM. In “1984”, the Party’s omnipresent surveillance apparatures, symbolized by the telescreen and Thought Police, infringes upon citizens’ privacy and individual freedoms. Similarly, recent revelations have sparked debates about the balance between national security and civil liberties. Edward Snow den's disclosures in 2013 revealed the extent of mass surveillance by intelligence agencies, echoing themes of information in Orwell’s dystopian world. As Snow-den stated, “The government has granted itself power over its citizens’ lives. The parallel;d between real-world surveillance issues and Orwell’s cautionary tale serve as a stark reminder of ht dangers of unchecked government authority and the importance of safeguarding individual privacy right.

This year’s book bans also disproportionately affect books about the experiences of marginalized identities. Specifically, 30 percent of all instances are books that include characters of color and themes of race and racism, 30 percent represent LGBTQ+ identities, and 6 percent include a transgender character. Book bans also targeted stories centering immigrants (at least 68 instances), Jewish characters (at least 41 instances), and Muslim characters (at least 57 instances).” (Pen America) School districts aaround the east coast are banning books off of characters and ideologies, but, it shouldn’t be the schools choice to keep children from reading a book they can benefit, learn, or entertained from. “The whole literature of the past will be destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, bryon–they’ll exist only in newspeak versions” (Orwell 47) Both events paralell by the literature of the past being altered or banned completely from society.

1984 shows a new side of unwanted surveillance. That our society isn't aware of. The propaganda in 1984 might seem like it is an over exaggeration Of one being watched, but it is almost eerily close to the truth. While watching carefully, it is almost evident and obvious that we are under a strict watch as well. Articles in 2023 state how evidently you are being watched by your technology/ household appliances. If you were to say certain things to your smart home or alexa, or even siri, you would be filed and watched for suspicious behavior. (Which is almost comparable to Winston's telescreen.) There were videos blowing up in the past about how a certain line would cause a smart home To become suspicious of your behavior. This is modernism of being watched or monitored. You are being recorded at almost all times.

This article is about how in vietnam there are rules being made that stop their country from trading with other countries. This also puts tighter restrictions on the people who live there. These new laws make it impossible for anyone to travel into or out of the country. This reminds of the the novel and I believe that it is the same thing happening in real life then is happening and has been happening in Vietnam. This relates because in the book no one is allowed to leave their country. Although in 1984 they stay there in fear of a war outside of where they are. In 1984 no one knows if there is or isn’t a war on the outside but since they have nothing else to believe they stay in fear. In vietnam the citizens are forced to stay in and have no access to the outside world.

In the website that i found about the helpfulness of the surveillance that the government has access to. When we think of the government having access to any type of surveillance going from our home cameras to our phones to school property it's everywhere. In 1984, they have to be very careful with what they say or their behavioral change. It can sound exaggerated but it's true, anything and everything they say or do the party or big brother will know. Like they say “Big Brother is always watching YOU.” in the article it states how with the help of having the access to people's personal information they can see how Latin, African Americans, Muslims and much more are very target in different community. A lot has to do with the heart breaking inside 9/11 due to the terrorism of this incident the government has became much stricter on surveillance and is why it's important for them to have access to our personal lives.

The themes displayed in George Orwell’s, 1984, are still apparent in our world now. When assessing Oceania to North Korea’s capital borough of Pyongyang, both governments do not give their people independence. In Ji-Min Kang’s article, “Dating North Korean Style” Kang announce North Koreans were stripped of most basic basic rights. “ When I lived in Pyongyang we couldn’t voyage around the assert and didn’t have any free word . But the command succeeded in getting rid of these basic individual rights…” (Kang 2) . What Kang is saying is that North Koreans had a colossal majority of their noncriminal liberties stripped absent, meaning they had no noncriminal liberties. Similarly, this is clear in the innovative 1984 because the individuals of Oceania had an extremely lookalike way of deciding their individuals, charitable them itsy-bitsy to no core rights as an individuals. In 1984, the essential character Winston stated, “Nothing was your own apart from the few cubic centimeters inside your cranium . ” (chapter 2, pg 34) . This proves that in Oceania they had none to themselves, such as civil liberties apart from whatever they had in their brain. so the themes in Orwell's innovation are still pertinent in today’s society. Just like in North Korea, they too had nearly none to themselves. So you could say that individuals in North Korea and in Oceania. “ (chapter 2, pg 34). This proves that the themes in Orwell's novel are still relevant in today’s society.
