Scientology was founded by L Ron Hubbard, but now run by different people. He started out as a science fiction writer before joining the military and then he wrote "Dianetics," before he created Scientology, which made him a lot of money. But as the book lost popularity and made him less money, he turned it into the cult of Scientology to keep making money. 
What they do is they will do "auditing," where they have people talk about a traumatic memory and keep going over it and they do this for earlier and earlier points in people's lives and after doing that for hours, the people start to create false memories of traumatic things in past lives. Scientology believes these past life events are real. They also believe that we are ghosts of aliens, basically. This is one way they  brainwash people.
"Dianetics" was written in 1950. Scientology still exists today even though L Ron Hubbard died of a stroke even though scientologists deny that he "died" and say that he just left his body.
Scientologists will do anything they can to protect the image of their religion and will sue, doxx, threaten, and blackmail people who expose the truth about the cult. Scientology also has people who are called "handlers" who follow anti-scientology protesters and try to distract them.
Scientology members are distanced from their family if they are against the cult. 
They actively try and recruit celebrities to bring money and popularity / legitimacy to the organization.
They believe in an alien god, Xenu, but only the highest members are told about him and anyone lower is told that anything they hear about him is lies, so they don't actually believe in him.
Lawsuits have shown proof of crimes such as kidnapping, forced labor, and human trafficking committed by Scientology.

The WBC is mainly homophobic, but seems to be able to hate almost everyone. The WBC hates a wide variety of people. They particularly hate LGBTQ+ who they refer to as " sodomites". The WBC has many activities. One of the favorite activities of their church is protesting funerals of anyone they dislike. They also like having "protests" with under 10 people. This ends in 100's of people counter protesting them.

nxivm was--It was recently investigated and the leaders, people who were apart of the cult were put on trial after evidence of it's horrendous acts surfaced--a deluded cult ran by a megalomaniac, it seemed innocent at first as they offered 'self improvement classes', but it was a scam, and much deeper than that, the leader of the cult, Keith Raniere wanted everyone to respect and renown him as basically a god--being a business man he was very good at being persuasive and manipulative, but he had used his talent for the wrong things. nxivm was a very serious thing, and involved human trafficking, rape, and many other things. 

Many Cult's leaders share a same interest, they always want something and always demand respect--as they grow they demand more and more until is snowballs and they go to far, it can seem innocent at first, as they may be offering 'self improvement'--but as you'd find out later that was just manipulation for them to force their beliefs on you. 
Also in most other cults, there is usually a sense of hierarchy, where it revolves around an ideal or thing--this can be a person, a god, etc. 
One of the most powerful characteristics and talents of cults is the ability to persuade and emotionally manipulate their members into believing their beliefs, to enforce their beliefs and to keep their members in the cult they use many tactics of fear mongering, social disconnection and blackmail even.
