Ergotism was a common condition resulting from rye bread. The symptoms of Ergot are crawling sensations in the skin, tinglings in the fingers, vertigo, hallucinations, mania, melancholia, psychosis, and delirium. Children and pregnant women are most likely to be affected by the fungus. The document states, "Rye…was a well established New England Crop…. Seedtime for the rye was April and the harvesting took place in August...The timing of Salem events fits this cycle". The document states, "Once or twice they were caught in their own snare; and nothing but the blindness of the bewildered community saved them from disgraceful exposure and well-deserved punishment. They appeared as prosecutors of every poor creature that was tried…. It is dreadful to reflect upon the enormity of their wickedness… there can be no doubt that they were great actors". This excerpt from the document supports the idea that the children were faking it all just for fun. Ann Putnam Jr. admitted that she lied about all of the people she accused, she proved that she (probably with other children) was faking it all for fun. Document K further provides motivation as to why some of them were making everything up. Ergot was a drug that caused delusions we made many people believe that they were actually being bewitched. Some of the children were simply acting and accusing people of being witches for fun and excitement. Both of these theories have been supported by multiple sources and are very reasonable.
