It means having an awareness of one's own cultural identity and the ability to understand and appreciate people of other identities and to work effectively with them. Our cultural self is formed in great part by our gender, age, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, class background, and sexual orientation. It can also be influenced by the region we grew up in and by our affiliation to religious traditions.
