I leave my house at 10pm to get to the hotel for 10:40pm. My house is about a 40 minute drive away from my work if there is no traffic. I take 2 highways, cross a bridge and multiple streets within Burnaby to get to the hotel. Working at the hotel, I receive complimentary parking in the casino/hotel parkade. Once I get to work, I change into my business professional attire and make sure I look the part of a manager. I prefer to get work at least 20 minutes before my shift so I am not stressed about being late and can take my time to get ready.

When I first arrive to the front desk, I say hello to all the PM staff which includes a bellmen, guest service agent, switchboard operator and a duty manager. We discuss how the shift was and if there are any pass on notes. I then receive my radio and headset and set up my computer on the front desk. On the overnight shift, it is just myself and the night auditor Taryn. I start my shift off with reading my emails and check-in the last people. At around 12am, I start printing the end of day reports for the General Manager, owners and accounting. At 1am, I start the pre audit. This includes printing credit card reports, inputing numbers from the system sales summary report in an excel spread sheet and print terminal reports for the 2 restaurants, In-room dining and Starbucks (which is located in the hotel). Once that is complete, I start the audit.

At 3am, I usually take my 45 minute break. We are entitled to 2 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute break. I usually combine 1 of my 15 minutes with my 30 minute break in the night. I go to our "heartland" which is what we call our staff lounge for my break. They have full meals for $2 or complimentary cereal and toast. Usually have 2 slices of toast with peanut butter and scroll on social media during my break. No-one is awake for me to text.

Once the audit is complete, I sort through all of the outlet servers cashouts. This involves sorting through all their payment receipts. I make piles depending on the type of payment the guest used (Visa, American Express, MasterCard, Debit, etc.). I also have to sort any receipts that were charged to Hotel accounts such as service errors and discounts. At this time, I look for any receipts that have a discrepancy. I know if there will be a discrepancy before I sort the receipts because I used an excel spread sheet to input all the terminal information. If it does not balance, I know how much I am off and look for that receipt. Most of the time, servers just input the wrong number by accident. I use the trial balance to make sure all the credit card payments that are done on the terminals match what was posted on Opera, our PMS system. This is an important task for my position. Usually everything balances but when it does not, I have to find the problem and fix it. I also input more information about payments into the excel spread sheet
