Erra

Erra are the band which got me interested in the more technical side of Modern Metalcore; their style involves much more technically challenging guitar riffs and leads with sometimes unusual picking patterns and time signatures, which found it's way into my songwriting. The two most notable Erra albums which have influenced me are 2018's "Neon" and 2021's self-titled. They are also one of the bands that I can credit my interest in using electronic elements in metalcore to, which Erra has experimented increasingly with for their last two releases.

Northlane

Northlane were my gateway band into the more electronic side of Modern Metalcore, in particular their 2019 album "Alien". Their use of 7 string guitars and very low tunings ultimately led to me purchasing one for myself, and just like most bands in the genre, they led me to gravitate towards writing lyrics about deep, dark and personal themes, with the angry sound of the music often reflecting the angsty lyrical content. Northlane's influence on me has been furthered by the fact that they are also Australian, and so I've been exposed to them a lot more than international bands.

Deftones

In a 2021 interview with Chris Andrews of V13 Media, Erra's lead guitarist Jesse Cash stated that the band's biggest inspiration on album dynamic is American alternative metal band Deftones. Cash states that "in terms of the records I like to make I prefer the Deftones approach where I have the balance between really aggressive heavy seven string songs (and others)" (Andrews, 2021) referencing Deftones' ability to have many songs of contrasting characteristics on the same album without these contrasts clashing heavily.

Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nail's influence on the music of Erra can be heard from only their more recent material onwards. Their brand of dark, industrial electronic music found its way deeper into Erra's music after the band covered their song "Heresy" in 2022. Regarding the song "Slow Sour Bleed" off of Erra's latest record "Cure", Jesse Cash comments, “This song scratches an itch of influence that we haven’t had the courage to explore in the past. We covered ‘Heresy‘ a few years ago and it was so fun to listen to, so we wanted to do an original song in the spirit of Nine Inch Nails.” (Kill The Music, 2024).

Northlane

Northlane's gradual shift in music style encouraged Erra to go down a similar route in terms of creating music that they truly wanted to create. Jesse Cash adds, "They took a big chance with their last couple of records, and I think that kind of inspired us to move more along with what we like and not put too much pressure on ourselves to always appease older fans" (Alternative Press, 2018).

Electronic Music

Electronic Music's influence on Northlane's music has become incredibly prominent over their last few releases. "Electronic Music inspires me" (Guitar World, 2022) Guitarist, sampler and key songwriter Jon Deiley tells Guitar World in a 2022 interview. Elements of Trance, House and Trip-Hop can be heard all over Northlane's previous 2 albums, with Deiley citing particular influences such as Madonna, Deadmau5 and Filter (The Music, 2022).

Family Life & Upbringing

Northlane's 2019 Album "Alien" saw vocalist Marcus Bridge dive lyrically into some incredibly personal themes. The album tells a story addiction, domestic violence, and child abuse (Mike Hohnen, 2019) with several of the songs written about specific events in Bridge's tumultuous upbringing. Lyrics such as "I was raised in hell, I made it out by Myself" (Bloodline, 2019) sum up his childhood experiences succinctly, amongst a musical backdrop darker than Northlane had ever done.

Architects

Guitarist Jon Deiley credits Architects' guitarist Tom Searle as a key inspiration during the formation of Northlane. The band's name alone is taken from the title of a 2007 Architects song. The band's music saw Deiley incorporate techniques which were introduced to him by Architects' music, such as two-handed tapping. He elaborates "I’ve incorporated a lot of that, but I’ve kinda inverted it. Tom was doing it on the thinner, higher strings while I do it up on the heavier going between the open, the 12th and 24th fret to tap out rhythms that you wouldn’t be able to do the normal way. I owe a lot to Tom. I don’t know if another metal band would have given me enough inspiration to start messing around with stuff like that myself.” (Guitar World 2019).
