Our Grade 1 Class consists of 23 students with an age range of 6-7 years old. We focused on using the VT routines to explore the concept of time in Math with a focus on

Telling time to the hour and half hour

Reading time on analogue and digital clocks

Observing the characteristics of half-hour times

We begun exploring the concept of time using the See Think Wonder routine as a provocation. Based on student wonderings we read two nonfiction books on the concept of Time and students used the Think-Pair-Share routine to share their connections, what extended their thinking and what challenges they might still have. We also revisited our See Think Wonder Chart throughout our learning journey and answered some of our ‘wonders’ based on our explorations. After a few more readings, hands on explorations and investigations on time, students consolidated their thinking and advanced their learning using the I used to think, now I think routine in the form of video recordings and whole group written reflections (What We Know and What We Know NOW Charts).

The routines are fantastic as they provide the gateway into a child’s thinking. However, they tend to take a long time to execute and that is definitely a challenge for students of this age group. It requires practice and stamina that teachers and students need to build over time.

Most students preferred to share their thinking verbally however some students chose to write them down. I think these routines are very versatile which is key to differentiation. These routines also help to empower students by giving them voice and choice which in turn drives student agency.
