Poetry:
I know poetry is traditionally thought of to rhyme. There are other types of poetry that does not rhyme, strong statements, one verse at a time. Some are very short, haikus, for example, while others are longer.

Realistic Fiction:
I think I prefer realistic fiction to other types of fiction, but my mind might be changing based on my recent required reading; I really enjoyed “Skulduggery Pleasant”, which has elements of magic. I think of realistic fiction being a common form of fiction, but that might be because that is the fiction I have gravitated to in the past. I also think of realistic fiction as being just as it sounds, a story, that although fiction, could be a true story, for example, “Out of My Mind” by Sharon Draper.

Fantasy and Science Fiction:
I know both Science Fiction and Fantasy are both forms of fiction. I think of Science Fiction as having motifs of space, aliens or time travel, things that may be somehow related to actual science. While Fantasy makes me think of mythical creatures, witches, wizards, something more like “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

Poetry:
I realized why so many people have such a negative view of poetry, I myself am guilty of this as well. We were never exposed to poetry for just enjoyment, but the over analyzation of poetry, which has led to those negative views. I learned about the things children prefer from poetry, like narratives, visualization and sound devices, which when you think about it, makes a lot of sense.

Realistic Fiction:
Realistic Fiction was pretty much what I thought it to be. I learned when evaluating Realistic Fiction for children we should make sure there are no stereotypes and that the themes are not overly evident.

Fantasy and Science Fiction:
I learned about many different subcategories of science fiction, for example ESP and Steampunk which I did not even realize were genres. I also learned when evaluating science fiction and fantasy for children we should be sure that the themes discussed are universal.

Poetry:
I learned about many different poets and award winners, including Myra Cohn Livingston and Lee Bennett Hopkins. I want to find their poems and read them and continue to do more research about the poetry format. I would also like to memorize some poems to be able to share with students.

Realistic Fiction:
I would like to see some specific examples of Realistic Fiction to be sure I am understanding the genre correctly.

Fantasy and Science Fiction:
I would like to learn more about other types of fantasy, Dr. Perry gave a very good explanation of the different subcategories of Science Fiction, but again, I would like to learn more about Fantasy as well.

Poetry:
My new goal is to have “pocket poems” available to share with students, and also some I will memorize, and post a poem a day in my future library. I also will try and share more poetry with students for just the enjoyment of reading, so they are not only exposed to poetry through analyzing it in their English classes.

Realistic Fiction:
I will look to learn more about realistic fiction, specifically about those formerly taboo topics and maybe use some of those books for teaching sensitive topics to students.

Fantasy and Science Fiction:
I will share with my current and future students the different subcategories of Science Fiction and help them find a sub-genre that will interest them, like Dr. Perry said “There’s something for everyone.”
