The ritual, long popular in Maharashtra and Karnataka States, dates back almost 700 years, to a time when infant mortality was high, medical knowledge was scant and families had few places to turn for help.

Legend has it that a saint advised people whose babies were dying to build a shrine and drop the ailing infants from the roof to show their trust in the almighty. When they did so, the story goes, the babies were miraculously cradled to safety in a hammock-like sheet that appeared in midair.

From then on, prayers for the birth of a healthy baby in the region have included a promise to toss the baby as an offering to the god who granted the prayers. Villagers believe that the ritual brings the child long life and good luck, and maintain that it does no harm.

Baby Tossing is an Indian Ritual followed in certain parts of India where infants under the age of 2 years, are shaken by the priest and then dropped from a 30 to 50 feet shrine or mosque. While the origins of it is not known clearly,[1] this ritual is now celebrated in the first week of December.[2] It is practiced by Hindus and Muslims in rural regions of Maharashtra and Karnataka states in India. Example: Baba Umer Dargah and Digambareshwara Temple in Nagrala village. Every year two hundred families participate and over two hundred infants are tossed from a heigh.

Also known as the return of death, people bring the bodies of their deceased from family crypts, Enveloping them with new mortajas and then starting a procession with live music and dances with the corpses around the tumbas.1​

The tradition of the Famadihana seems to be of recent origin, having its origins very around the seventeenth century, being able to be an adaptation of the trad.

Religious ceremony, traditional ritual, and  horrific madness are all terms that describe the horrific act performed annually by thousands of Indian locals. The baby throwing ritual is an act in which infants are dropped from a 15-meter platform onto a cloth held by both Muslim and Hindu men.

This act has been rooted in the culture of southern Indian culture for about 700 years. Its obscurity, however, has been revealed only recently as it made its way into the world of social media. The act is believed to have come to notice when one of the men who participated in the ritual recorded a video in 2009.
