In Ralph Waldo Emerson's Self Reliance piece, the central idea that was portrayed was to not conform due to fear of backlash. A quote that I believe represents this is, “Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.”

Thomas More is a man of loyalty. He is known by his peers and loved ones to be a man of his word. While everyone around More is turning against King Henry, he remains silent about all of the political chaos, never giving anyone a straight answer into what he believes.

Thomas More's Principles

More is a follower of the king, and a conformer to loyalty. He does, however, refuse to acknowledge King Henry's marriage annulment because he believes that the king is bending the rules for his own gain, which is against More's ideals. More, however, was eventually tried for treason, and due to his principles of not conforming to protect himself, he allowed himself to be sacrificed.

More lived by the principle that, “nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” He may have gotten himself into difficulties with the King, but he never let up to his beliefs for a moment, he simply took the faith that he set himself up for. In his core, this brings him eternal peace, even if he himself is no longer.
