Teachers will spark questioning on how Earth's natural materials create such spectacular, natural structures for all creatures! Our lesson will move on to collecting rocks to paint for our school's pathway. Students can use watercolor and crayons to create beautiful artwork on their rocks. 

Logistics: 
Each student will collect 1 rock to decorate. 
It is our goal that our pathway will grow throughout the years. As we welcome new students to our community, they will each be welcomed to add to our rock pathway. 

This pathway will act as a symbolic space. When art, science, and culture come together--the pathway to innovation is endless ! Logistics: 
Students will be guided to only pick flowers and plants that nature has already uprooted. No flowers will be harmed in this process :) Teachers will provide cardboard squares for students to decorate their vases and flower pots. Students will collect their natural materials and arrange them as they choose. Our students will begin to explore light and shadow through an artistic lens. Teachers will asks students to explain what they notice about the shadow of tree. Students will engage in thoughtful discussions about what they think is happening, before moving on to sketching and paining. I anticipate this to be a week long project. I intend to hang this up for students to see throughout the year. This project is a hit for students as they get to be real crafty, using pine cones they collect during a whole class nature walk. 

Materials: 
  • pine cones, ideally collected via nature walk
  • washable paints in various colors
  • paint brushes
  • cups to hold paints, optional
  • tray or drop cloth for work surface
  • Aprons 

As always, this activity can be adapted to support all students. For students who may find it difficult to manipulate a paint brush or become frustrated with the splatter painting technique, can roll the pine cones in different colors of paint instead. The project will look wonderful!
