The family mentioned in Act 1 Scene 3 of 'Bent' With uncle Freddie may not be as simple as it seems.

I personally believe that 'The family' is a secret society of Homosexuals in Germany. I believe they are men coming together to express their sexual desires in private, and then living heterosexual lives outside of 'The Family'.

"The Family takes care of me. But you. Throwing it in everyone's face. No wonder they don't want anything to do with you."

"Why couldn't of you been quiet about it?.... Had a few boys on the side"

I believe that Max used to be part of this group until he expressed his sexuality, as a means of coming back, he says he'll marry the widow in Brussels. Notice how everything is like a business arrangement, and Max says he's "Good business"

I believe it is too coincidental that 'Uncle freddie' Is also gay and open about his homosexuallity. Being an uncle may be a higher status in, 'The family'.

The father mentioned may be another part of the heirachy within 'The Family'. The father may be a religious leader. It may be his dad, who knows about the family, but allows max to exist in such a group.

The idea of the family makes sense because of the cultural and political Context. They live in a time with mass religious pressure and persecution for homosexuals is a thing.

Think about it.
