DEFINITION: Skin scraped against a rough surface

a victim of lockjaw

INITIAL CARE: Clean the wound – Wash it well with soap and water. If there is dirt, glass, or another object in your cut that you can't get out after you wash it

POST CARE: Apply a thin layer of an antibiotic cream or ointment (Neosporin, Polysporin). For the first two days, rewash the area and reapply the antibiotic when you change the dressing

DEFINITION: Skin is torn from the body, Associated with major bleeding

INITIAL CARE: keep the wound clean and dry, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover the wound with a bandage.

POST CARE: Keep the wound clean and dry for about 24-48 hours

Open wounds should be cared for immediately

All wounds should be treated as though they have been contaminated with microorganisms

To minimize the chances of infection, the wound should be cleaned with copious amounts of soap and water or sterile solution
