Smallpox was a very deadly disease, 3 out of every 10 people who got it died. The first method to control this outbreak was the use of variolation, which is the process by taking material from smallpox sores and given to people who have never had small pox. To insert the sores, you can either inhale it or scratch it into your arm. Fewer people died from variolation than if they would acquire smallpox naturally.

Cowpox is a disease caused by a virus that is alot like smallpox. The experiment was a success, even when exposed to variola, the boy didn’t get smallpox. By around the 1800s, cowpox vaccinations were very common, mostly because it had fewer side affects and deaths than variolation with smallpox itself.

Benjamin Jesty was one who successfully vaccinated his wife and kids with cowpox during a smallpox outbreak. Sadly, it was not until later during Jenner’s work that the vaccine was noticed and understood.

Jenner observed that people working with cows got cowpox and said to be immune to smallpox, even when deliberately exposed. So, Edward tested his theory and found it it works, the pus from cowpox can make a person immune to smallpox!
