"This is a valley of ashes-a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air"(23). When this was said, it was one of the first things the reader learned about what the Valley of Ashes was like. Behind all the parties, drinks, and fun, was the Valley of Ashes, which showed how New York isn't all fun and games. This could be a metaphor or analogy about the story; it might seem fun and carefree, but there could be a darker meaning that is being hidden. This also corresponds with the theme of lies and deceit because all of the wealth and party could be a cover up for the Valley of Ashes and the conditions there.

"The 'death car' as the newspapers called it, didn't stop; it came out of the gathering darkness, wavered tragically for a moment, and then disappeared around the next bend."(137) In chapter 7, this quote explains the event that had happen; while Daisy and Gatsby were driving home through the Valley of Ashes, Myrtle ran out in front of the car. Daisy killed her accidentally, but did not stop; this caused Myrtle's husband, George Wilson, who is already suspicious that his wife is cheating on him with a rich man, to develop a supposal that the man killed her because he didn't want anyone to find out about their relationship. Wilson later finds out that the car belonged to Gatsby from Tom, who is actually the person that is in the relationship with Wilson's wife, and confirmed his assumption.

The themes we believe that best corresponds with our symbol, Valley of Ashes, is lies and deceit and class difference. Throughout the story, we read about how everyone is throwing crazy, extravagant parties and not caring about what will happen. However, in the Valley of Ashes, everyone here spends their time working in grimy conditions constantly. Also, it shows how class difference is so hard to change unless you're born into it. Somehow though, Gatsby was able to break this barrier and escape his poverty which we still don't know how he was able to acquire so much money quickly. The parties that are thrown cover up the bad conditions of the Valley of Ashes; so therefore, the parties can be seen as lies and deceit for what is really happening because it draws attention away from the Valley of Ashes.

The characters most closely involved in the theme of lies and deceit, as well as class difference and the Valley of Ashes are Tom Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson and George Wilson. Tom and Myrtle has an affair that George finds out about, only he doesn't know that she is cheating on him with Tom; when Myrtle was killed in the car accident, George became hysteric. He had concocted a theory: the man his wife had been cheating on him with, killed her when he drove past. Wilson then sets off to kill the man who killed his wife and had an affair with her. However, he kills Gatsby instead of Tom, because Tom hinted to him that the car that killed Myrtle was Gatsby's.
