When this was said, it was one of the first things the reader learned about what the Valley of Ashes was like. Behind all the parties, drinks, and fun, was the Valley of Ashes, which showed how New York isn't all fun and games. This could be a metaphor or analogy about the story; it might seem fun and carefree, but there could be a darker meaning that is being hidden. Daisy killed her accidentally, but did not stop; this caused Myrtle's husband, George Wilson, who is already suspicious that his wife is cheating on him with a rich man, to develop a supposal that the man killed her because he didn't want anyone to find out about their relationship. Wilson later finds out that the car belonged to Gatsby from Tom, who is actually the person that is in the relationship with Wilson's wife, and confirmed his assumption.

Throughout the story, we read about how everyone is throwing crazy, extravagant parties and not caring about what will happen. However, in the Valley of Ashes, everyone here spends their time working in grimy conditions constantly. Also, it shows how class difference is so hard to change unless you're born into it. Somehow though, Gatsby was able to break this barrier and escape his poverty which we still don't know how he was able to acquire so much money quickly. Tom and Myrtle has an affair that George finds out about, only he doesn't know that she is cheating on him with Tom; when Myrtle was killed in the car accident, George became hysteric. He had concocted a theory: the man his wife had been cheating on him with, killed her when he drove past. Wilson then sets off to kill the man who killed his wife and had an affair with her.
