7 Early Signs of Autism

The Director of Child Development at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Asma Sadiq, shares a few early signs of autism. One early sign is a child making minimal eye contact. Some children with autism have sensory sensitivity. Many constantly want to be held, while others do not want to be touched at all. Sadiq notes it is important to look at language, communication (verbal/nonverbal), and gaze monitoring. She concludes that many parents will pick up on these signs and have a gut instinct that something is off with their child.

What Causes Autism?

Study after study has proven that vaccines do not cause autism. There is no discovered cause of autism. Risk factors include genetics, being a male, environment, age of mother, age of father, and other conditions the child has. Some theories that have been disproven include the single gene hypothesis, the autoimmune hypothesis, the toxicology/teratology hypothesis, the epigenetic hypothesis. A multi-hit hypothesis seems to be the most probable cause because so many single-hit hypothesis are kind of half and half match to autism, which means if there was a combination, it would most likely be the cause of autism.

To help a child with Autism, you will need a medical workup, a gluten-free/casein-free diet, occupational/speech/other therapies, school enrollment, and a nutritionist (optional). PECS can encourage your child to speak. Use ABA to help your child learn how to react appropriately to every day social situations, with rewards for good behavior. Children with autism tend to be visual learners. Enroll your child in school when he or she turns three.

Is There a Treatment for Autism?

There are treatments that will help the symptoms of autism. The common treatments are behavioral and educational. For example, sensory integration or occupational therapy. Accommodations can be made for a child depending on their symptoms in school and at home. There is no cure for autism, just treatments for symptoms. Gluten free and casein free diets can make a huge difference. Magnesium levels and vitamin D levels are often low in children with autism, so there are treatments for these symptoms. All of these treatments are meant to make the child more comfortable and higher functioning.

ABA Autism Classroom Study

This video shows how Applied Behavioral Analysis is used in a classroom to teach children on the Autism spectrum. This video shows a couple of different students and the progress they made throughout one school year. One boy named Ethan couldn't even walk into a crowded room without having a breakdown: yelling and falling to the ground covering his ears. But after one year in a classroom with an ABA curriculum, Ethan is able to communicate and function in a classroom. His mom noted that he seems a lot happier. Another student named David melted down when he did not know the answer to something and often fought with his mom. After a year in this classroom, his communication skills have improved tremendously and the teachers reward his good behavior which helps David succeed in the classroom. A set of twins named Ashely and Rachel could not sit in one place for more than a minute in the beginning of the school year and they could only make ten sounds. Now, they can sit for a lot longer and they can say three syllable words. In conclusion, all of the students who spent the year in the classroom are now more confident and happier.

Understanding Autism: A Guide for Secondary School Teachers

Autism affects a person's ability to form relationships, communicate, and respond appropriately to the environment. It results from a neurological disorder that impedes normal brain development in the areas of communication and social interaction. Children with autism do not process the environment in the same way. A child with autism will often not understand humor. They feel more confident when you direct them to do things, instead of subtly telling them. "The Hidden Curriculum" is a term for all of the unwritten rules of social interactions that are often lost on children with Autism. Although not all children with autism are the same, they do learn in a similar way: visually. Therefore, they may need to be able to see something in order to interpret it. They are more likely to succeed with consistency and predictability.

The Beauty of Raising an Autistic Child | Ted Talk

Dr. Sally Deitch speaks of her experience of raising a child with autism. Her son, Liam, was diagnosed with ADHD, but she knew that they were missing something. So she takes her son to a psychologist and she tells them that Liam is autistic, after only one 1 hour session. One early sign that Dr. Deitch noticed was that Liam often did not sleep through the night. Another sign was that he never looked at the camera when she took a picture of him. As a three year old child, Liam watched a video on the planets until it broke. He could recite information about the different planets to his mom. Dr. Deitch has found that you have to speak slowly for Liam to understand you because children with autism process words slower than a normal child.
