One major issue is the killing of infants. In the book, infants with undesirable traits are murdered just as babies with downs syndrome are killed or aborted in the womb in our world. Another issue is government control. In the book the Elders controlled everything from the weather to jobs even to family. In our world we are fighting to gain control back from the government on issues like gun control, abortion, education and privacy. Which brings me to my next point, we are also fighting for privacy and concerned with the access that National Security Agency (NSA) has. This issue reminds me of this movie I watched called Snowden where Edward Snowden exposes the fraudulent behavior of the government that can monitor anyone's electronic devices without them even knowing it. You have to take the good with the bad. In The Giver the Elders erased negative memories which caused a chain reaction and erased positive memories too. No one had memories of things like war or starvation, but they also lost the opportunity to enjoy snow and colors. The Elders even controlled the weather, taking away surprise or the unexpected. My mom has always told me we have to weather the storm to really appreciate the joy of the sunny days. This couldn't be more true in The Giver, both literally and figuratively.
