I think the most eye opening moment of this second part of "12 Years a Slave" is when Patsi asked Platt to kill her. It's terrifying that she thought death was better than slavery.

In the film the scene that reinforced the everyday life of a slave had to have been when the masters would continually hit or physically abuse the slaves when they were in the fields working and just by their houses minding their own business. This was depicted a lot through out the film and in doing this kept reminding us, the viewers, the way life was for a slave.

Throughout the film we were shown many different ways that the slaves were mentally abused as well as physically. The main character Solomon was not even called by his own name. The slave owners justified their actions by viewing the slaves not as humans but as property.

My thoughts on the film were that this was only a fraction of what people would have to go through. The hard work that was required on a daily basis with little to no food, The restrictions of ever leaving the plantation to go into town, their freedom. Comparing the past to the present, we have completely evolved as a society.

In the film, the rights given to white men doing the same work as the slaves was as different as fire and water. The slaves were treated as property. Repeatedly in the film the slaves were dehumanized. They were beaten, worked to death in the field, raped, and not provided simple necessities. In the slave narratives I heard the slaves say that they had good masters. This baffled me because they viewed their slaves as property just as slaves were portrayed in 12 Years a Slave.

In the film, slaves could not learn to read or write because they were afraid slave would become smarter. Slaves who knew how to read were label as "devil". Knowing how to read and write, Solomon almost lost his life if he was not smarter than the master. Being a slave for 12 years, Solomon had to mentally and physically stay alive hoping one day he'll return to his family. Unlike Patsi, she would rather died than being a slave because the way she was beaten and raped; she has no close relatives to keep her going. In my view, women had suffer more than men because they were doing the same work as men, moreover, sexually abused by their master.

The film portrayed how women were treated and all they had to endure just as told in the slave narratives. As told in the slave narratives, females slaves were raped by their slave owners and faced harsh punishment, even death if they did not obey their slave owners. In 12 Years A Slave, Patsi was raped and beaten often by her owner. The movie also displayed many other aspects of slavery such as in the slave narratives, picking cotton all day everyday, expression through song, and poor living conditions just to name a few. It was a very hard movie to watch without different emotions like sadness and anger arising because it was not just a movie; it was a horrific yet compelling account of what actually took place in the not so distant past of our nation. Also, the movie gives light to more recent events around racism taking place currently.

The Slave Narratives have similar resemblance to the film "12 Years a Slave" due to the physical and mental abuse that the slaves faced on plantations and farms. Many slaves would be assaulted by leather whips, and upon further research, many of these whips had items attached to the ends, such as glass and stones. This is legitimate and human cruelty envisioned.

She is his best cotton picker and because of his attraction to her she is treated thr worst out of all the slave by his wife

She wasn't to cause of everything and still get whip. The slaves are treat more worse than livestock in my opinion.

I've seen this movie countless times over, during my life and seeing this movie again made me remember why i hated it. Showing up to class, i wasn't aware that i would be watching this. During the movie i almost broke down more than twice, I wanted to leave the classroom. This movie has always had this impact o me. The way people were taken and treated as property. The constant reminder that we, as a people, were thought of as less than animals. It sickens me.
