Dale's idea on Open Canvas (Campus?) Day is interesting. How would we have band and chorus rehearsal though, if students could go wherever they wanted to? I would think that FLEX is somewhat along those lines, however teachers can require students to attend. It might be something worth trying on one day to see how it goes.

I use Canvas as an online course management tool for Guitar and Band classes as a way for the students to submit playing tests. I use it for History of Rock for students to submit projects. I administer short quizzes on Canvas for all classes. I use it in Music Theory simply as a Gradebook.

As a diehard Steelers fan, I appreciated Dale interjecting the Eagles LII Superbowl Champion picture. That is 7 rings for PA!!!! 6 of them belong to Pittsburgh.

Luke, you shouldn’t let Burke bully you. I liked your poem, haha. You were a good tech coach. J Wow, over 50% using canvas shows some consistency for students. (Modules/Assignments) Interesting to see student comments. I like the common thread of expectations, contact and course goals being available through canvas. Good vision for your PLC. My new goal will be to incorporate the canvas calendar – I currently use modules extensively but that is mainly it. The professional development and networking is and will continue to be helpful. I also use video submissions for taping practicals which has helped save class time with assessments. I like the LTI section, I do not currently use this. Nicely done!

Wow...I didn’t know that so much could be done on Canvas. I would really appreciate having some time dedicated during a Staff Development day to being taught how to use the apps (like Canvas) as the students are expected to use them.

I love the functionality and versatility of this app. Especially the ability to access all the learning tools. I believe that it is a great way to incorporate many different learning styles into a course. It allows for great organization. And I already see this “open canvas” idea being used in some of the blended classes.

I love Canvas and use it virtually every single day. However, this year more than ever, I’ve had students tell me that they don’t look at Canvas (especially when they get home). I’d be interested in coming up with a school wide policy or game plan about students checking Canvas everyday (perhaps getting alerts/notifications besides the to do list). I really love the discussion board feature because many students who don’t participate get to interact with other students that they normally would never talk to. It’s also nice to see that other departments are using the English department rubrics! Consistency is key for our students. Finally, I LOVE the idea of an Open Canvas Day! I think it would teach our students to use the technology responsibly. Nice work!

Glad to see others are using those to reach the quiet kid and the absentminded kid respectively.
I'd love to see us use Open CANVAS Days to make up for Snow Days in the future. That would be amazing.
Since I learned how to use "pages" in CANVAS, I feel like my course is a lot cleaner. I highly recommend using them.

As a special ed teacher and case manager, it makes it much easier to have access to the materials that my students need to complete the assignments that we all know they are overdue with! It takes away the excuse that they don't have the materials they need to make up their work since lots of teachers have most materials uploaded to their Canvas page. The downside is that sometimes our lower level students have difficulty navigating

I complete agree with the implementation of some level of consistency between teachers using Canvas. As a student, it can be very confusing to have Canvas site's for all of their classes look completely different. I think it would serve the students better to have every teacher have basic information located in the same place. For example, everyone puts their syllabus in the same place, sets up their modules in the same way, or uses the calendar for homework assignments.

I would like to see a standard template or blueprint course issued to all teachers. This could be over the summer or during professional development at the beginning of the year. With this, could be a seminar explaining the list of requirements, how to edit it for our individual classrooms, and what we all need to do throughout the year to maintain this consistency between teachers.

PLC’s Vision:. All teachers at certain/basic level, Students should also be at a basic level Nice Job breaking into sections, I would agree that we (teachers) should all have our course information up and running with basic elements discussed in video. Like the part and agree that the discussion boards are so important for ALL students to be able to contribute.. The Open Canvas Day very interesting idea…only worry I would have are all our students mature enough to handle the freedom? Still would be very interested in looking into it – Nice work overall!

I really wanted to hear Luke's poem! Great job on your presentation. In the process of writing my hybrid course, I have learned a lot by way of what Canvas has to offer both teachers and students. It is quite tedious in the beginning as far as getting your course set up and organized, and I am constantly modifying what I have posted as I learn how to use new features. In the end, the payoff will be a more efficient way to work through the course curriculum and a huge time saver. I find that the Canvas calendar is a great way to hold students accountable for work owed and due dates. Like the previous post, I often find that the majority of students ask for hardcopies of assignments, which I totally understand. I try to offer both paper and electronic copies for students to use, but again, all the lesson information, calendar, etc. is posted online. One other pitfall for me is that I sometimes forget that I have online submissions to grade!

I really enjoyed this video! Very creative and funny!

I personally LOVE Canvas! It has made such a difference in how I lesson plan and grade assignments. It has also given us the ability to try out the blended courses this year! For my classes I use the homepage, modules, the calendar, discussion boards and assignment drop boxes. The one thing I have been leery about using is the quiz feature. What prevents students from cheating? Is there a way to lock them in the quiz and "disable" the rest of the iPad? Or do we just have to monitor them using the "vision" app?

Having a Canvas day would be fun! I am not sure how our student body would respond to it, but it would give them student voice/choice if they are able to go wherever they want to work on assignments (and actually complete them)!

For as much as students love their technology, they do seem to want their assignments printed out. I do accommodate them when they ask, but try to remind them that college will be similar so they should embrace the technology while they are still here! I think it's much more efficient to look at everything on Canvas and use Pages and Noteability to house student work. This can keep things much more organized than a messy binder of papers!

Thank you for sharing some new ideas regarding the Canvas platform. I use Canvas for my Internship program. I makes life easier. However, I don't use all of the fantastic features that your group showed in the video. One of my favorite features of Canvas is the calendar and assignment due dates. My students are held accountable to turn things in on time or the "clock" will mark the assignment late. I might consider using the discussion feature in the future to talk about soft skills and common problems in the workplace. One question for Luke...where is the poem?

I like that Canvas can be adapted to be used as needed for a course. Having a set of common elements that need to be included on Canvas pages does offer some consistency but forcing all courses to look and function the same will deter from its usefulness. Much discussion should be had when determining what aspects should be required to be incorporated into all courses for Canvas. I believe what I think is important and should be included as a mathematics teacher is not the exactly the same of what a social studies or English teacher might think should be a requirement. Students get tired of doing and using the same technology and applications across multiple courses time and time again. Teachers need to have the flexibility to incorporate what they feel is necessary to complete their course goals and objectives.

It can be versatile and beneficial for teachers of all disciplines.

I do not have an official unit plan included. Also, I use rubrics obsessively for projects and as part of my obsession, think that everyone else should too.

The Canvas Day sounds like it would take some organization. Expectations would
need to be clear. As for having this be in replacement of a snow day, I know that many students do not have Internet connectivity at home. Access would have to a consideration.

I was browsing and found this: https://psu.instructure.com/courses/1741795.

I think that the use of Canvas is a huge upgrade from the old Moodle. I have taken online course for grad school over the past 5 years (I do prefer face-to-face) and I wish Wilkes used Canvas. As a teacher, it is easy to use and as a student it is easy to follow. Like Beth mentioned, I have also changed the look of my Canvas twice. When I first used Canvas, I had it set up like Moodle. Now, I have my courses divided into units, and then lessons within each unit. I think my course could almost be used as an online course for students, with the exception of some labs. Additionally, I think having a single location for resources for our teachers would be great. I have said it before, but I think we have some pretty creative and smart teachers in our district and we should use their lessons, best teaching practices and "what works for them" more.

Great idea of putting together the common rubric on what we should have on our canvas sites especially since you are using the student feedback you received. Canvas is a great tool, but like it was mentioned in the presentation we need to help students feel comfortable with the tool and I think being consistent with Canvas from class to class is important.

The Best Practice rubric is an awesome idea- love the consistency across teachers. I also feel Canvas would be awesome for students who have difficulties with organization or who have attention deficits, in that everything is all in one spot- due dates, assignments, missed class notes if a student zoned out. Which these students would take advantage of it more... Also, I know it wouldn't be necessary for most students, but I'm thinking for the more needy students, if having a parent component to canvas would be helpful?

Luke- the video in the beginning is #extra haha jk :)

I love canvas or at least being able to refer students and parents to it as I do not use it myself- but I had no idea the extent of it's uses. Your presentation was extremely informative and helpful to anyone wanting to enhance it's effectiveness. I love that you can reinforce lessons using audio or video presentations which for some students is a better way for them to learn. Also to be able to access your teacher's canvas page after being absent for a day or in some cases multiple days would prove very beneficial. Kudos to the thorough job you did explaining it and how in depth you were with it's multitude of options. I know some students complain and I wonder if they don't know how to use it appropriately. Do you get
a turnout at your Monday morning sessions? I will refer some "non-believers" to it.

Canvas is a great tool in teaching. I like the consistency of classrooms all using this for their classes because it is especially helpful for the support students. I like the use of embedded videos sot vary the instruction in class. It is always difficult to keep students focused is all you do is lecture. The calendar feature is great for organization.
Loved the beginning and ending with Cope and Burke!

As with anything, the more time the students have with something, the more fluent and self-reliant I've seen them become. This year, strictly with seniors, the ability to troubleshoot issues I've seen in the past has been more readily taken upon without a lot of the stresses experienced in the past. Best practices with canvas, when used, make life easier for all. I really liked the idea of an Open Canvas Day (sounded a lot like open campus mid-terms to me) but with the flexibility around regular, required school hours. Unit Plans have become the structure of my personal canvas courses, and seeing them put into common use across curriculum is something that is almost expected from the students' perspective, and I welcome it.

I feel that parents should be more educated on this...as that's a complaint we often get in meetings. Love the intro and exit.

I'm very happy about the switch to Canvas. A great place for students to pull resources, especially those who missed class and needed notes or homework. Once you put the initial work in load notes/worksheets/videos etc, it's a great tool and resource that will ultimately save you time in the long run.
