The U.S. government says the pipeline could produce 374 million gallons of gasoline a day. Researchers also say the U.S. government is removing the oil in an environment friendly way. The oil would also decrease the dependence on foreign oil. On the other side, tribes from all over the United States are protesting this pipeline. The Sioux tribe states how the pipeline runs through sacred land and how it would disturb burial sites of their ancestors. Protesters also mention how the U.S. should look for cleaner and renewable energy sources.

Benefits and Drawbacks

Some potential benefits of the Dakota Pipeline is that the pipeline is said to have 7.4 billion barrels of oil. Developer Energy Access Partners said that the pipeline can transport 470,000 barrels of oil in one day. That amount of oil can make 374.3 million gallons of gasoline. Actual benefits of the pipeline, after one year of service, are it has been transporting 500,00 barrels of oil a day. The pipeline has also increased domestic energy independence. The pipeline also created 10,000 jobs for people. Some drawbacks of the Dakota Pipeline are that many people were protesting. The pipeline goes through sacred burial sites of ancestors from the Sioux tribes. The tribe has also sued the Army Corps of engineers because the tribe said they allegedly violated the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Act. The pipeline is also built under the Missouri river, which is the site where the tribe gets their water to drink. The police has also used pepper spray and had to arrest many protesters.

Obama vs Trump

The Obama administration chose to not support the Dakota Pipeline. But Trump does support it. The Obama administration wanted to show respect to the land of the Sioux tribe and not disturb the burial sites of their ancestors. Trump sees a great way to make lots of money for the US and lower prices of oil. President Trump also had a personal investment towards the pipeline. Both see the Dakota Pipeline as a way to increase the economy and produce lots of oil.

I do think the Dakota pipeline is a good idea. The pipeline can help boost the economy in the United States because this project is worth $3.7 billion. The pipeline is said to transport 470,000 barrels of oil in one day. That amount of oil can create 374 million gallons of gasoline. The pipeline has also been free of any incidents on the environment. Energy Transfer Partners also said that the pipeline was built 50% thicker to go even beyond the safety regulations. The Dakota Pipeline has also created 10,000 jobs for people in the United States.

Youth Groups and Social Media

Youth groups were the some of the first people to oppose the Dakota Pipeline. Their concerns were about the sacred land and the drinking water. The Dakota Pipeline was dug under the Missouri river, which is where the Sioux tribe gets their drinking water. The youth groups were worried the pipeline would contaminate the water. So they chose to oppose and protest the pipeline. They also wanted to keep their ancestors' burial sites secure and respected.
Using social media can be good and bad when protesting the Dakota Pipeline. Using social media can bring more awareness to people and could cause more people to help the cause. But at the same time, However, only using social media does not make changes. People would have to actually do something to make changes. Social media can also be biased. Social media can only give you one side of a story without hearing the other side. This could make people want to protest the pipeline without knowing the benefits of it.
