A lot of variables come into play when attempting to get the longest long jump, but horizontal velocity seems to be the most crucial variable since it directly affects horizontal displacement. For reference, a free-throw line is about 4.6 meters from directly below the backboard, which while doesn’t seem impressive when long jumpers could get double the length, he also needed to reach a height of roughly 3.1 meters. Jordan being 1.98 meters in height, which is just as tall as your average NBA player, needed to take the extra step to both go that far and reach that high!
