Summary

Sixteen year old Starr Carter has a mix of two worlds. One, attending a fancy and wealthy school and the other, living in a predominantly black and poor neighborhood. After catching up with her childhood friend at a party, Khalil, she was burdened with one of the most unbearable pains she never thought she would feel. He was shot by an officer after being pulled over.
After the incident took over headlines people started to call him things such as a drug dealer or a thug so the police had less of an interest to investigate. Starr's neighborhood became more and more violent trying to figure out what really happened that night. The only person who was there is Starr. Whatever she does or does not say can destroy her community or even her life.

There was not a single thing I disliked about this book. Every part of this book made me want to keep reading and made me more and more interested in what would happen next. So far what has been most interesting was when Khalil actually got shot by the officer because that part sets the scene for the rest of the book and how it affects Starr's behavior.
This book reminds me of all the killings of black males in today's society such as Trayvon Martin and Philando Castile. Those are just two of the many stories there are of innocent black men being killed for nothing. Each story is important to know about and one simple voice can really change it all.

"what's the point of having a voice if your'e going to be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?"
~this quote is important because we all have a voice for a reason and if we don't speak up when we need to sometimes its not going to change or fix the problem..I liked this quote it made me realize that my voice does matter and it is important.
"Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong,The key is never stop doing wrong."
~I like this quote and I feel like it's important because it shows that you should never give up no matter what.
"Your voice matters, yours dreams matter, your lives matter. Be the roses that grown in the concrete"
~This quote is important because it is very important to always be the light in a dark situation and I know for myself it can be hard to stay positive in tough situations but sometimes that is all I can do.

I highly recommend this book to everyone to read. Although I am not entirely finished the book, from the start I have felt like I matter as a person no matter who my parents are or where I go to school, I have my own voice. I think it's important for everyone to feel that way.
