Positive Image vs Negative Body Image

First off the definition of a Positive body image is, " a clear, true perception of your shape--you see the various parts of your body as they really are." (Unit page 2) To get to this point some major mental obstacles need to be overcome. The feelings of being ashamed of a persons body shape are some of the hardest thoughts to turn into positive ones. If someone feels bad enough about their body shape they have a risk of developing an eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia.

Ways to improve body image

" the key to developing positive body image is to recognize and respect our natural shape and learn to overpower those negative thoughts and feelings with positive, affirming, and accepting ones. " (Unit 7 page 3) This is hard to do when today's society is trying to sell the latest body product. As said in the dove video in the iBook the media has to get a person feeling bad enough about themselves to buy their product. The health book then goes on to mention several "I WILL" statements.

How I keep my Body Image Positive

I like the will power that says, " I WILL exercise for the joy of feeling my body move and grow stronger. I will not exercise simply to lose weight, purge fat from my body, or to “make-up” for calories I have eaten. " (Unit 7 page 3) because this is what I do every day after school. I go to practice for rowing and I really enjoy the feeling of getting stronger every day. Especially I feel really good when we worked super hard at practice and I sweat a lot. It makes me feel like I accomplished something other than just something at school.
