My name is Will Schulze. I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and have wanted to be a Longhorn for as long as I can remember. My father was also born and raised in San Antonio, but my mother is from a small town in New Jersey. I am a first year Business Major (and am also taking pre-med requisites), and have various hobbies and passions, including participating in recreational sports and listening to music. Although I did grow up speaking only English, I have taken several years of Spanish; however, I am definitely better at reading it than listening to or conversing with it. I love the outdoors and nature in general, and I hope that I can experience some of the amazing sights that the world has to offer. I was first intrigued by this class because of my interest in other places throughout the world, and I’m even more excited now that I’ve learned that Professor Kelm teaches about cross-cultural interactions within McCombs, as it can help me out with my major.

Universalism vs. Particularism Examples

Two aspects of the Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars theory are Universalism and Particularism, where a person is either more likely to follow all rules and laws at all costs or more inclined to celebrate the differences in life, respectively. My first example is Particularism and is the Black Eyed Peas’ song “Where Is The Love?” It’s about being able to empathize with people and accept them rather than just assuming and wrongly judging who someone is. My second example is an example of Universalism from the TV show Prison Break. In it, the main character is attempting to break out of prison with his brother, but is constantly running into obstacles with all of the rules in place and wardens who are enforcing them within the prison. My next example is also Universalism and is from the movie True Grit. It’s the story of a girl hiring a bounty hunter to help avenge the death of her father and fits into Universalism based on its concern with justice and the idea of “an eye for an eye.” My last example I can think of relates to Particularism from the movie “Good Will Hunting.” I believe it relates because in the movie the genius protagonist is taught to open up and experience life and have deeper relationships with people.

Individualism vs. Communitarianism Examples

Another two aspects of the Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars theory are Individualism and Communitarianism, where each person progresses through their own efforts or confirms that every achievement comes through shared knowledge and values, respectively. My first example is of Individualism and is that Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg each taught themselves how to code and have built themselves extremely successful companies in Microsoft and Facebook. My second example of Individualism is Mariano Rivera, who became one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history after being a poor son of a fisherman in Panama destined for a life of mending fishing nets. My third example is of Communitarianism and is the non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity. It’s where a group of people get together and build small houses for homeless people, and it results in whole neighborhoods of houses for people that wouldn’t have otherwise had homes. My final example is of Communitarianism as well and is Ted Talks, their slogan is “Ideas Worth Spreading” and this fits perfectly with Communitarianism’s definition in that Ted Talks is all about spreading ideas through short speeches (hence the slogan) to better society.

Two more aspects of the Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars theory are Specific and Diffuse, where achievements are more results-oriented and objective or more focused on quality and a balance of all parts, respectively. My first example is of the Specific viewpoint and is of a chemistry lab. The whole essence of a chemistry lab is to end up with extremely specific results through a very precise set of directions. My second example also relates to the Specific perspective and is statisticians. Being a statistician includes constantly calculating and presenting concise and objective data. My third example relates to the Diffuse viewpoint and is the famous over-the-top Old Spice commercials, where instead of simply advertising for their deodorant, Old Spice displays all of the crazy things you’ll be able to do if you wear Old Spice. My final example is also an example of the Diffuse mindset and is the recent Coca-Cola Super Bowl commercial where the commercial barely relates to the product (until the logo at the very end), instead highlighting America’s diversity with several people from different backgrounds.

Achieved vs. Ascribed Examples

Two more aspects of the Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars theory are Achieved and Ascribed, where excellence in personal accomplishments is rewarded or where status and respect are something that one is born with or inherently has, respectively. The first two examples I have relate to Achievement, and are the Nobel Peace Prize and Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle. The Nobel Peace Prize awards excellence by granting the prestigious award to the person who makes the biggest accomplishments in furthering social justice for that year. Larry Ellison is an example of Achievement as he grew up an orphan and then founded one of the biggest multinational computer technology corporation in the world. My next two examples are for Ascribed, with the first being Justin Bieber and the second being Will Smith’s children. Justin Bieber is an example of the negative side of Ascribed in this instance when he was arrested for a DUI, losing some people’s respect of his ascribed fame from his singing career. Will Smith’s children have piggybacked off of their dad’s fame he received from his acting career to attempt to create acting and singing careers for themselves, a status that was much more ascribed than earned.

Inner vs. Outer Examples

Another two aspects of the Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars theory are Inner and Outer, where virtue is inside each person and inside we know what’s right and should follow our conscience or where virtue is outside of each person in the beauty and power of nature and that we must follow those forces, respectively. My first example is of Inner and is of John D. Rockefeller because he built his whole career by himself, working several jobs until he broke through and became one of the richest people in American history. My second example is similar and is also Inner. It’s Mark Cuban, as he began working at the age of 12 selling garbage bags, and is now an extremely successful businessman, owner the Dallas Mavericks (an NBA team). My third example of Outer is from the new Star Wars movie when the character repeats over and over “I am one with the force, and the force is with me” as he walks through gunfire, giving himself up entirely to a force outside of his control. My final example is of Outer and believing in luck as in the movie The Luck of the Irish the main character must fight to get back a lucky charm for his family.

Sequential vs. Synchronous Examples

Two more aspects of the Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars theory are Sequential and Synchronous, where time is defined strictly and everything must be done on time or when time is more flexible and free-flowing, respectively. My first two examples are of Sequential time and are of the interview in Parks and Rec and the American education system. In the interview from Parks and Rec the character says “time is money, money is power, power is pizza, and pizza is knowledge” which she gets a bit carried away with but the main idea of not wasting time and being sequential are there. The American education system is very sequential in its progress from grade to grade. My second two examples are of Synchronous time and are of Dell’s business model and ACL. Dell’s business model is synchronous as they pride themselves in carrying little to no inventory and delivering products just on time with just enough materials to do so. ACL is synchronic because although there are set times for the concert, it feels like one concert ends and you go to the next one with no true concept of time.
