How adolescents that are exposed to cannabis have a high risk of getting psychiatric disorders

According to my research, cannabis is the most consumed drug among adolescents. Heavy use affects maturation refinement by disrupting the regulatory role of the endocannabinoid system. Adolescent exposure to cannabis may represent risk for developing psychotic-like symptoms in adulthood. Heavy use may increase risk of abnormalities, psychotic illness, mood disorders, and any type of substance use later in life.

Teens who engage in the heavy use of cannabis are more likely to have disadvantages in their brain development, those mainly being structural and performance. Marijuana use can also mess with adolescents academic functioning, which includes their social and occupational functioning extending later into life. It can have lasting affects though it is not yet known if these affects are permanent.

What portions of the brain are affected by cannabis?

A portion of the brain that is affected by cannabis is the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is located at the front of the brain, in front of the promoter cortex. It plays a central role in cognitive control functions. It influences attention, impulse inhibition, prospective memory, and cognitive flexibility. It also involves complex behaviors and decision making. It helps adolescence reason better along with helping them develop more control over impulses, and make better judgement. Exposure to cannabis can cause delayed maturation of the prefrontal cortex.

Pruning is a natural process that occurs in the brain between early childhood and adulthood. Myelination is a process in which oligodendrocytes produce layers of myelin that wrap around the neuronal axons and act as a layer of insulation for the transmission of electric action potentials down the neuronal axon. They both help reconfigure brain connectivity into the adult form.

How are adolescents susceptible to addiction cannabis?

The main reason teens are susceptible to addiction is because of peer pressure. This is especially true with younger people. Our peers can influence us to such a degree because we want to fit in and we don't want to upset our friends. Adolescents may use drugs or drink alcohol just because their friends do, even when one may not have used a substance before.
