1. How does the POV affect how the reader views the events of Anton's life?

Question 2: How does weather play a key role in symbolism throughout the work?

Question 3: Why does the author include so much detail in the first section of his novel?

Thought Provoking Question: Specifically, a scene that grabbed my attention would be page 30 when Anton is captured and a guard says something along the lines of "Are we imprisoning kids? Or is this a little Jew?" I feel this shows how antisemitism was still prevalent in Germany during this time and dehumanizing towards many Jewish people. What are your thoughts?

Bess's Thoughts on the First Section

I didn't expect things to happen so quickly. There were a couple of gaps where more information could have been used, but I think that adds to the whole idea of what happened that night in Harleem. I find it really interesting how the family was playing a game when the murder happened. The dice do come up again at the end of section 1 and I think that was a good detail added by the author because it make me want to read more to see what will happen. I enjoyed the different characters that were mentioned because we are able to see both the side of the victim and the perpetrator. I think that having the situation happen to a younger child makes it more of an interesting read for a young adult. I have a larger chance of connecting myself to Anton rather than an older individual.

My thoughts on sections 2-4

I thought that these sections happened to be a lot slower than the first one. I did, however, like how the author did a time jump to the future, so that we didn't have to wait later in the book to see how adult Anton has been affected by the situation. There were a few interesting things that came up, one being the whole story about the women who Anton saw the night he was taken away. We find out her name is Truus and that she played a role in the assassination of Fake Ploeg. We get to see that Anton is married and that he is a successful man. Anton still suffers from the night his parents were killed and every time he hears something new about the situation he shuts down. He sees Fake Ploeg's son and that interaction is not a good one because the son believes that his father did nothing wrong. Overall, I think that this section provided the reader with some answers to some of the questions, but it was a hard section to be interested in.

Discussion 2 "Thoughts" - In these sections, something that caught my attention would be the way food is described. Earlier on we never went into detail about food, all we knew was Anton's family had very little food. But as we go on throughout the chapter the details about food emerge.
