Bringing hope home is a non-profit organization with the goal of providing, “unexpected amazingness to local families with cancer through financial and emotional support." The organization was founded by Paul and Nicole Isenberg. Paul and Nicole met in 1983 when Paul was a senior here at WCU. The couple got married in 1991, and in 1995 got pregnant with their first child. Soon after Nicole, at the age of 32, became pregnant with a second child and became ill. She went to the doctor at 9 months pregnant and found out the heartbreaking news that she had stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After delivering her baby Nicole started treating the cancer with chemotherapy. During these very difficult times, Paul and Nicole had close friends and family who helped and supported them, which the Isenburgs were extremely grateful for.

Paul frequently referred to people in ran into at "great guys," which is why when they planned a benefit dinner to gather all of their friends and raise money to help families who were less fortunate, it was called the "great guys dinner." This first took place in 2001 and 100 guys got together and raised $13,000 to donate to the American cancer society.

Sadly in 2003 at only 39 years old Nicole lost her battle with cancer, but the "great guys" continue to do good work in her memory.

In 2008 the great guys group became incorporated and the name was changed to bringing hope home. The goal of this organization is to raise money to help support families with cancer. they offer emotional and financial support by paying critical bills for local households with cancer patients in hopes that it will take some stress away from the family.

Why is this important

When someone in a family gets diagnosed with cancer there is a lot of emotional stress added to their everyday life. In addition there is the stressor of money. Cancer treatments can be expensive, and not every family is able to afford treatment and daily essential easily. The simple action of raising money to pay rent or utilities for a family removes a lot of pressure. Some families have little money to begin with, or the primary income is cut or lost once the person falls ill. Sometimes it is even necessary for a family member to be around to take care of the sick family member at the time. This makes income drop rapidly and the price of treatment makes their spending increase dramatically. Not every family is lucky enough to have supporters so it important to offer community support.

why did I choose Bringing hope Home

there are two main reasons why I chose this organization. As a future educator, it is important that you think about what may be going on in a students life at home. Cancer is an unfortunately common disease that impacts many families. A family member becoming sick, or becoming sick themselves could be detrimental to a students education. It could increase a lack of focus and be the reason why they may not be doing work outside of the classroom, and in many cases when a family is paying medical bills it is difficult for them to provide a child with basic needs let alone supplies needed for school.

This topic hits very close to home for me, because when I was in 3rd grade My dad got diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Right before I started fourth grade my did passed away. This was extremely difficult emotionally, but also financially for my family as my dad was our primary source of income, we were lucky enough to have a lot of support from my community, friends, family, and even the teachers at my school. On the first day of school my and my twin brother were given school supplies by a classmates family who knew about what had happened. Looking back I couldn't be more grateful for all the support we got in such a difficult time, which would have been a lot harder without people helping us along the way.

This is why I think Brining hope hope is a wonderful organization doing great work, because I know many families are need support at a moment like this and even a little bit of help can go a really long way.
