Should school halidays be shortened? by Emma Hernández

This morning I have read an article suggesting that school holadays should be shortened because they do not benefit students, otherwise, it said the longer the holidays the worse for the students´ brains. I was absolutely stunned by the idea so I would like to outline some arguments against it.

Firstly, I believe students need a big reward for their effort during the school period. It gives them the motivation need to study all year and give their best. Secondly, having long holidays gives them a bigger chance to match holidays with their parents, that most of them, can´t be with their children all holidays, so they can travel together, do activities, spend some quality time together... Finally, if students have longer holidays, it doesn´t mean they won´t do anything during this time, on the contrary, they have a bigger chance or opportunity to travel, visiting new places, meeting new people, getting to know other cultures...

My favourite holidays were the summer holidays of 2023. That summer I went to Lisbon with my family, we went one week, stayed in a beautiful house and had a great time. That year I also went to the "Camino de Santiago" with some friends, we laughed the same as we walked, and we walked around 120 km so... I spent my birthday there and it was unique. A few weeks before we went to a country house with my family and the same group of friends, as every year. That summer was just memorable.

So, to conclude, I would like to say that there really isn´t a bad effect on long holidays although some people think that, and that it is a chance for students to spend the best time of the year doing things they love with the people they love.

The Case for Shorter Summer Vacations: A Necessary Reform in Education

For decades, the traditional long summer vacation has been a staple of education systems worldwide, particularly in the United States and other Western countries. However, research increasingly suggests that prolonged breaks may do more harm than good, particularly in terms of academic retention and equity. Shortening summer vacations and distributing breaks more evenly throughout the year could significantly benefit students, teachers, and families alike.

The Problem: Learning Loss Over the Summer

One of the most well-documented issues associated with long summer breaks is the phenomenon known as "summer learning loss." Studies, such as those conducted by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) and Johns Hopkins University, have shown that students, particularly those from low-income families, lose a significant amount of the knowledge they gained during the school year. According to research, students can lose up to two months of mathematical and literacy skills over the summer, requiring valuable instructional time to be spent on review when school resumes in the fall.

Moreover, the impact of summer learning loss is cumulative. Over multiple years, students from disadvantaged backgrounds fall further behind their more privileged peers, exacerbating the achievement gap. This growing disparity highlights the urgent need for a more balanced academic calendar that prioritizes continuous learning.

The Benefits of a Revised School Calendar

Improved Academic Retention By shortening summer vacations and introducing shorter, more frequent breaks throughout the year, students are less likely to experience knowledge erosion. Year-round schooling models, which replace the long summer break with more evenly spaced vacations, have been shown to help maintain academic performance and prevent the need for excessive review time.

Reduced Stress for Students and Teachers A more balanced schedule allows for regular breaks, helping students and teachers avoid burnout. Instead of an intense school year followed by a long pause, a more distributed schedule promotes consistent engagement and better mental health.

Enhanced Economic and Social Equity Shorter summer vacations can alleviate the childcare burden on working parents, who often struggle to find affordable and structured summer programs. Furthermore, students from lower-income families, who may not have access to educational resources during the summer, would benefit from continuous learning opportunities.

Implementing Change: What Can Be Done?

Transitioning from the traditional school calendar to a more balanced model requires thoughtful planning and collaboration among educators, policymakers, and parents. Some school districts in the U.S. have already adopted year-round schooling with positive results, proving that such a shift is both feasible and beneficial.

Additionally, policymakers should consider investing in summer programs that keep students engaged academically, particularly for disadvantaged communities. If reducing summer vacation proves too controversial, expanding access to structured enrichment activities could be a viable alternative.

Conclusion

The evidence is clear: long summer vacations contribute to learning loss, widen achievement gaps, and place unnecessary burdens on families. A shift toward a more balanced school calendar, with shorter summer breaks and periodic vacations throughout the year, would provide students with better academic outcomes and overall well-being. It is time for education systems to modernize and prioritize continuous learning over outdated traditions.

Should School holidays be shortened??

After having read the article, I couldn’t disagree more; this article proposed the idea of shortening summer holidays. Holidays are absolutely necessary for us after a hard-working year, as they give us the opportunity to have rest at home, travel, be with our friends, clear our minds, and get ready for the next year, and for all this we need a long period of time.

It is true that we could, for example, start our holidays on the same days after, such as the first of July, but actually this doesn't make a big difference for anyone.

As I´ve said at the beginning, it is something essential for us. Firstly, because giving our minds time enough to get calm, stop thinking, and reduce the stress we suffer throughout the year is at all ages something basic, but especially for teenagers and little kids. Secondly, it is a time in which we hang out with friends, we practice some sport, and we get in contact with nature, which are very important things that people are starting not to do over time, and finally, as a last argument, I want to say that it is true that after this period we forget much of the information we’ve learned over the previous academic year, but as we get back ready to study and with our minds cleared, it only takes a few days for us to recover the information we have missed.

Just to support this, I want to talk about the best holidays of my life. During the summer of 2023, I started an unforgettable trip.

It all began on a beautiful morning at 3:00 am. My family and I woke up, and we got ready for a 12-hour trip to Tui, a village on the border between Galicia and Portugal. That was going to be the origin of our path towards Santiago de Compostela, so actually our adventure started 2 days later, when we started walking to complete a phase of approximately 30 km each day, and I can assure you that I enjoyed each phase as I've never enjoyed anything. Each of them gave me the opportunity to meet and talk with other people, even though some of them were not Spanish, but overall it gave me the chance to connect with the Earth, not only with nature but also with present and past civilizations. The trip was sadly concluded 6 days after we arrived in Santiago de Compostela, but actually the trip will never end; it is always going to be part of me in the way that I will never forget any of the people I met and each thing I learned, and it is always going to be the place where my mind feels safe during bad moments.

So as a conclusion, I don’t think holidays should be banned or shortened because without this time to rest, for sure things wouldn’t be the same, and we would all be less happy, which is actually very difficult nowadays. So now let's disconnect and plan our next holidays.

Yesterday I was bored lying in my bed surfing in the internet when suddenly appeared me a noticed that frightened my, it saids that in some countries of the

European Union were thinking about reducing the holidays, but they don’t know in what way making it, because they were looking in an option that nor damage the students like long holidays such as summer but neither make the course very heavy for the students. When I finished reading this I hallucinated so much that I got paralyzed during a couple of minutes, how it is possible that the only part of the year students enjoy was going to be deleted, so I am going to express my opinion.

Firstly, I think the only reason that a student have of trying harder during the course is because they are going to be rewarded with holidays in which you are free of doing whatever you want, this doesn’t mean be all day with nothing to do, the other way around at this time of the year is when students learn how to socialice or for example learn some other cultures by traveling, that in my opinion is much more important than having good marks. Secondly and finally I believe that they need a period of time in which the can settle all the knowledge they have been collecting during the year in their brains ,and once the information is settle starting with other syllabus, because if not all what they have learned during a whole year will be wasted.

For example one of the bests experiences I can remember is on a summer concretely the 2024 summer in which I did all you can think about, traveling to amazing places such as Asturias in which I learned a lot about its history and gastronomy or Malaga where I rested and I had fun with family, met with friends which makes my days to appear shorter, but the most important was something many people overlook and I think is the more important thing of summer and what makes it so special, it is such an insignificant thing like playing bored games with yours grandparents, even though we don’t realize it gives them years of life.

In conclusion, I want to say something to the people who were trying to quit holidays, now that you have already read this article, you will continue defending your though about vacations?

I was amazed to read an article in the newspaper saying that summer holidays should be shortened. This article suggests that summer holidays were not good anymore for students, not only that, it was suggesting thar summer holidays should be schedule again or shortened and I couldn´t disagree more.

First of all summer holidays had always been there and I´m pretty sure that for most of students is the biggest motivation to continue along the year. Secondly, summer is not only time for students for doing nothing, most of them travel abroad, learn new cultures and lenguages and make new friends! And from my point of view that is much more important... Finally, summer It´s also family time, during the year students are more concentrate in their studies and activities, moreover, also their parents are more busy, and is in summer when they have free time to share and have some quality time.

Last summer holidays were the best experience I´ve ever had. I went to a summer camp in Ireland, and it was amazing, I met people from so many different countries and I made new friends, furthermore, I learnt much more english and so many things from diferent cultures. That summer I also went with my family to Greece and we had such a good time there!

In my view, summer holidays rather than being a problem are necessary for students and it´s when they really learnt useful things for life.

Last week I red an article talking about summer holidays, and I got really surprise.

The article propose that schools should no longer have long holidays in summer, but in my point of view, this is not a good idea.

I strongly disagree with the suggestion of have shorter holidays. Firsty, children and teenagers work almost all the year with few holidays during it and they had lot's of exams, so summer holidays is their way to blow off steam and relax. Secondly, many children and teens have family in other parts of the country, or even in the world, so summer holidays is the only time of the year when they can see their families or friends for some days. And Thirdly, many people spend their summer holidays travelling or visiting some museums or other culture places, so summer holidays are a source of culture for many people that travel to other places.

Last summer, I enjoyed a lot, and I have enough time to do all the activities I wanted to do. In June I Spent some days with mi friends of the high school and we did a lot of great things that we cant do when we go to high school. In july I went one week to a summer camp in Murcia, and I met people from many parts of the country, as I made lot's of friends that I still have contact with them nowadays. In august I travelled to Cartagena to see my grandparents and go to the beach with all my family. And in september I enjoyed the feria with all my friends.

In conclusion, summer holidays cant be shortened, because they have to be long, and they have to be a part of the year where not only children or teenegers, also adults pass a great time with famiy and friends, if we make shorter summer holidays many things that are posiible thanks to summer, wouldent be possible.

I am quite annoyed by an article I had just read about shortening summer holidays in schools. This article stated that long summer holidays led to learning losses for students, who are said to lose mathematical and literacy knowledge during this period. I would like to point out some arguments against this idea.

First of all, I do agree that we don’t remember some of the knowledge that we had during the school year, but i wouldn’t say we lose them. We still have the concepts, they just need to be refreshed. Secondly, I don’t believe that what we learn in school is all the knowledge we need. We can learn History by visiting places, we can get to know new cultures and acquaire social skills. There is so much that you can learn in your free time which, during school, you don’t have time to learn. Lastly, I think the climate conditions are an impediment to study. The high temperatures would make it so difficult to focus and would create stress. The best thing you could do in summer is go to the pool or go for an icecream with your friends to cool down. We need that period to relax and create some good memories.

Most of my best experiences were during summer holidays. I remember that one year when I travelled to Pirineos with my uncle and cousins. As the road trip was quite long, we stopped two days in PortAventura. I enjoyed it a lot and saw incredible natural landscapes!

In conclusion, from my point of view, long summer holidays are needed because there has to be time to relax and, also, to learn things of your own interest, not just what school teach you.

Last week, while I was "Studying" for an english exam, I stumbled across an article suggesting that summer vacations should be reduced, I could not disagree more about it:

-At first glance it might sound like a good thing for some people, specially parents who think their children forget everything after the summer. But the summer vacation is also really beneficial in the fact of learning new skills, socialising with new people, go on trips, disconnect from the constant burnout of exams and schoolife and spending quality time with your loved ones.

-Also, something that may seem like it hasn not any correlation with this... Have you actually BEEN to a highschool in summer, with almost 40º celsius, inside of a 55 square meter class (Diego de Siloe´s ones seem way smaller) with almost 30 people inside? Its actually not comfortable, good smelling or even bareable to be if you ask me.

-The building is just not designed for summer periods, even if you add AC to fresh up the classes, having in account we dont even have an apropiate heating system for winter periods... I hate that pellet system we have, my whole body is freezing during math class, even though im RIGHT WHERE THE RADIATOR IS.

-anyways, as a conclusion, I would say that shorter vacations are far from a good idea for the reasons I stated just above. In fact, I would suggest making them even longer, just to make sure I enjoyed my vacations well.

I've recently heard many people talking about if school holidays should be shortened, I was completely stunned by this idea, because I've never heard such a view like that before. However, I completely disagree with it in many aspects, some of which I will comment below.

Firstly, holidays take up a bunch of time from the student, even when this one is at home (place supposed to be relaxing and chill), so holidays are a good form to "return" the student this lost time. Secondly and probably most importantly, holidays aren't only the perfect way for students to relax, chill and recharge batteries for the next assessment, they're also a fabulous way to meet new people and cultures or spend some high-quality time with their families. And thirdly, with this mentioned activities students might do in holidays, these are still a good way to prepare students for returning to school and have a better academic performance!

For example, my last summer holidays were something memorable, mainly because I met new people with whom am very close right now and because I did a bunch of cool stuff such as having fun with my friends in my village festivals. That summer I also went on a cruise with my parents along the mediterranean in which a learnt a lot of many countries cultures.

So as a conclusion, I'd say holidays are very important for students and should remain as they are right now, because at the end of the day, holidays are the way to relax, meet new people and cultures, and to prepare them to have a great comeback to school, holidays are what gives equilibrium to students!

I was very surprised to read an article in my local newspaper; This article suggested that the students summer and Christmas holidays shouldn´t be so long, since they stop and slow down student learning. I´d like to outline some arguments against this view.

I strongly dissagree whit the suggestion that vacations should be shorter. Firstly, students need some days to rest and focus on their lives. Secondly, students need to have a life outside of school, high school, university to enjoy their free time doing sports, travelling... And thirdly, during the course, many students get stressed due to their exams, homeworks, projects...

Last vacation was a memorable experience. My family and I went to a concert in which many families crowded around the stage shouting the singer´s name, and the songs didn´t stop at any time. I could see many teenagers with their girldfriends, boyfriends or friends, a lot of parents with their children singing and dancing to the music.

From my point of view, long holidays are necessary because during that time, you are not stressed and you can do everything you like. The time you spend with your family and friends is invaluable.

Last Wednesday, while I was reading, as I do every morning, the digital news of my city ,I came across a piece of news that made me reconsider whether I really prefered Summer Holidays as I currently enjoy then, from June to September,or whether I prefered them to be spread out throughout the year in intervals from Monday to Wednesday (working days) and from Thursday to Sunday(public holidays).I think that, like all approaches , it has its pros and cons .

First of all, I'm going to Talk about the pros or why I prefer Summer Holidays as they are .As the name suggests, they are holidays to enjoy in Summer, with weather that encourages you to travel to the beach, swimming pool, rivers or any place where you can do water activities, take long walks or have a quiet drink on a terrace with Friends and without rushing.

Secondly,I think that the Summer temperaturas are not conducive to spending long morning locked in a classroom.Thirdly , I prefer the holidays as they are because they give us time to disconnect from studies and start the next course with more enthusiam and desire.

As for the cons,I can say , first of all, that so many weeks of disconnection make us forget some of the knowledge we have acquired, especially in subjects that I like less.Secondly, I can say that I dont like It because I spend less time with my Friends(each of us spends the Summer in a different place).Thirdly, we enjoy fewer days off during the year ;the Christmas and Easter holidays are shorter.

I have very fond memories of my last Summer vacation.I spent a few days in Port Aventura and the good weather allowed me to go to all the rides and enjoy all the shows.During this vacation, in addition to Port Aventura and the beach , I was able to visit other countries such as France ,where we stopped to watch the famous Tour d' France

To conclude, I think that Summer holidays have to continue as they are currently because they are for resting and disconnecting from the routine, being able to travel to longer destinations and being able to visit our towns that celebrate their festivals at this time

I was very surprised to read an article on a newspaper talking about why should holidays be shortened. This article suggested that students lose a lot of knowledge on our two months summer vacation, and that they shouldn’t be that long.

I strongly disagree this article. First of all, after being all year working and studying, students should have a time to rest so they don’t collapse and they can start the course motivated. Secondly, students visit new places and know a lot of people on summer vacation. Social life is also very important in people of that age. And thirdly, the high temperatures would make teaching and learing very difficult, they could not concentrate and give their best.

Last year summer was amazing. I went to the beach with my family and I had so much fun there. I also went a week to Galicia, and I loved all the food and the landscapes, I had so much fun. The weather there was very good, it wasn’t as hot as in most of Spain. I really loved that!

In my opinion, summer holidays are good as they are and they mustn’t be changed. It’s something memorable that we will always remember as good and funny moments. Althogh we dont study, we also learn a lot in the summer by making new friends, learning the history of the places we visit and spending quality time with our families. So, should holidays be shortned? I don´t think so.

School holidays are one of the times that students enjoy the most. However, there are those who believe that they could be shorter. The idea of reducing them has to do with the fact that, as they are so long, some students forget what they have learned and have a harder time returning to classes when they return. In addition, it is said that long vacations can make students very distracted and lose time that they could have used to study more.

On the other hand, there are those who defend long vacations, since they allow you to rest, recharge your batteries and have time to do things that cannot be done during the school period, such as playing sports, reading or traveling.

In conclusion, I think that although shorter school holidays could help maintain what has been learned, it is also important to balance the rest time so that students can return to classes refreshed. The key is to find a middle ground that works for everyone.By Juan Luis Arcas

i was scrolling through TikTok when I saw a post that said that summer holidays should be shortened, because as a parent, it's a mess having the children in the house without doing anything.

As a student myself, I could see why a parent could say that; however, students at school have a lot of pressure because, at the end of the day, they need to get good grades.

But I also think that instead of shortening them, they should be split throughout the year.

Take February as an example; students don't have any vacations for almost a month and a half, and students have work thrown at them crazy fast.

Sometimes your children don't have attitude; they just had a bad day or maybe they are just tired , as they have 6 hours of 6 different subjects, to then go home and still have work left. They work around 8 hours daily, and then, if they didn't make laundry or clean the dishes, they are lazy.

So as a conclusion, I don’t think holidays should be banned or shortened because without this time to rest, children get stressed and lately develop diseases or so.

When I read an article suggesting that school holidays should be shorter, I was surprised. A local newspaper published an article in which they propose that school holidays, specially summer ones, shouldn't be that long. I'm not agree with this article and I'd like to outline some argumnets against this view.

I disagree with the article because I think that students need that long holidays. Firstly they need to disconect and relax, and if they had less time, they're not going to do that because they'll be srtessed thinking about what should they do when they came back to classes. Secondly, it depends on the place, but in mediterranean cities, it's imposible to have classes during summer, students would melt at the break!

We also have have to take into account that we're talking about children, they need time to have fun, enjoy with friends, travel and do whatever they want. During the schoold year they're always studying and doing homework, that's why summer holidays are perfect for them to relax.

If you ask any teenager what their favourite part of the year is, they would probably say summer. So, from my point of view, we cannot ban school holidays because students wouldn't have the rest they desreve.

I was listening to a podcast, and a few teachers were saying that the school holidays are too long. Their reason for this opinion was that students lose rhythm and find it hard to start studying when they come back from holidays. While that might be true, I think that it´s the only con that the school holidays have. Let me explain my point of view...

Firstly, although school holidays make students lose rhythm, it is still important for students to rest. If they had no holidays, they would have nothing to look forward to, meaning they would not be motivated to work hard since they have no reward for their hard work.

Secondly, students should be able to relax and spend time with their friends and family. Socializing is important for everyone but especially important for teenagers and children. Developing relationships and friendships with people is a skill that is meant to be learnt when you're young and have more time for people, because when you are older you might have a job, kids and more significant duties to take care of.

In my opinion, if they change anything about the holidays, it should be the number of holidays during the year. I think it would be more useful to have less Christmas and Easter holidays and finish school earlier. This would make us have longer summer holidays and avoid having exhausting classes in the scorching heat. This would also mean that schools wouldn't have to spend money on air conditioning, which is very expensive.

In conclusion, holidays benefit everyone because I'm sure that teachers also enjoy the holidays they receive from their work.

The other day I was reading some articles on my phone when I saw one suggesting that summer holidays should be shorter.

The article suggested to shorter summer vacations and distribute breaks more evenly throughout the year.

Firstly, I don't think this is a good idea, students need long vacation after a long year of hard work so they can rest without any worries.

Secondly, when we have a short gap of vacations, almost all teachers send us things to do at home or they schedule us an exam right after vacations, so we will be worried for part of the vacations.

And thirdly, some students have family far away from them and want to visit them, or some families who just want to travel and visit new places, with which they can learn many things.

Our best experiences are always created in summer, we have all the time for us and for doing things we like. I remember one summer some years ago when my family and I went to the beach with my cousins, it was a memorable experience. Some weeks later we went to Leon, where we stayed some days, and we took a bus to Galicia where we had a great time and ate the famous seafood from there. From there we went to Segovia to see the aqueduct and eat suckling pig in a famous restaurant.

Not only we visited several places, we also had a great time with the family.

In conclusion, summer vacations should stay like this so we can rest without any worries and spend time with the people we love.

Holidays are best time of the year for many students because we finally rest from academic stress.

However a big question arises, should holidays be shortened?

There are opinions in favour or against.

First of all people who support the idea of shortening holidays are based on the fact that in such a long period , students tend to forget the given subjects and what they have learned during this course.Which then when you return to class implies a double effort to get back the rythm.

Because most of the time , holidays are not always used productively.

On the other hand people who refuse to reduce holidays tell us that long breaks are essential for students. Holidays allow young people disconnect and recharge their energies for the next course.

If they were shortened, there could be an increase in stress and anxiety among students , affecting their mental health.

In my opinion, i would keep the holidays as they are, even if i don't remember anything i studied last year, because they are very good months in which you enjoy the shinny weather , you can travel, spend more time with your family, etc.

The other day I was going through internet when I was shocked by an article that standed that school holidays should be banned cause of all the problems that it carries: The post said that as students came back from holidays its memory about the previous course work was gone, forcing the teachers to reteach students, wasting time were they could be learning new topics.

I don´t really agree in this, i think in fact that it is a very wrong point of view and i´ll be afraid this may be applaid, so i am going to expose you the reasons why this idea is nonsense:

Firlstly, if this came up it won´t be well recieve by everybody, lots of parents, teachers and students will heavly dissagree and even they could organize strikes, which will only create more problems.

If it is true that students memory is affected during the holidays, it doesn´t cost that much to catch up on the high school summary, and they really need the time to relax after an stressing academic year. In fact, the biggest motivation for a student are the holidays after those exams, so having all year to work and study will just end up with dismotivated students that are too much tired to keep the class rythm, causing the opposite reaction as wanted.

And, another point that is very important, is about how will this affect the economy of the country: most money comes from the turism, not only because of those that came from other parts of the world but from Spain itself in summer and vacations, so the coastal area and more places of interest will suffer a reduction of visitants, cause they are in school!

I remmenber the feeling after the last exam of the year, being releived that all my effort has been worth it and that now I can rest and enjoy the holidays. Knowing this was going to happend, I worked harder so I could be proud of my job and then realx, but if there wasn´t any long period of rest, I can make sure that I won´t have been working so hard.

In conclusion, student deserve holidays after their work and banning them will be a huge mistake that I wish won´t be done.

I've recently read an article regarding the time length of summer holidays. It suggested that summer school breaks should be shortened and rearranged throughout the year as it would "benefit" students. I was completely shocked by the idea so I'd like to outline some arguments against this view.

I strongly disagree with the suggestion that summer holidays shouldn't be so long. First and foremost, having almost three months to have fun and live brand new experiences that students can't live while they are in school motivates them to push harder all along the school year so they are free during summer to make the most out of it. Secondly, summer holidays are the perfect time for pupils, but also for teachers to recharge and relax, otherwise, they would end up burnt out and have a worse academic outcome. And lastly, summer can be extremely hot, especially in my town and I truly believe that this harms student's academic performance as they have to make an extra effort to concentrate.

Last summer I went to Oporto with my family and I also spent a lot of quality time with my loved ones. I had such a great time, and as I see it, I experienced many things that taught me very useful lessons for everyday life that I wouldn't have learnt at school.

All in all, rather than disadvantaging students and their well-being, summer holidays are necessary and a perfect opportunity to relax, have fun and learn other important things in a different and more enjoyable way, so I don't think they should be banned or shortened.

Should summer holidays be shortened? By Martina Fernández.

In a recent blog post I’ve read, the writer argued that summer vacations should be shorter and more distributed throughout the year. While the idea may sound practical on the surface, I disagree with this perspective. In fact, I believe that long summer vacations are not only necessary for students but are essential for their academic improvement and their well-being. In this blog I will present the reasons for why the traditional long summer break should be maintained.

One of the reasons why I think distributed vacations are not as good as summer ones is the belief that long summer breaks are important to academic progress. This break benefits students' academic and personal development because it gives them the opportunity to recharge the energies they’ve lost during the long year, which is crucial for maintaining focused and active in the following year. Students are often under constant pressure to meet deadlines, complete assignments, deliver projects, and prepare for exams, the long summer vacation offers a break from this intense academic environment, preventing their burnout and giving them space to explore their own interests, travel, make new friends, learn skills that could be useful for their self-development, or just to relax. This time away from the classroom also helps to ensure that students return to school refreshed and with renewed curiosity.

I also think that they’re also important for spending time with family and friends, that because of school you may not have the time you want to be with them. Summer vacations allow us to go abroad with them and create amazing experiences that can mark us for all our lives.

For me, this marking experience happened the summer of the past year, in which I made a lot of cool trips with my family. One of the best things we did was when we went to spend a few days camping. There, we slept in tents in the middle of the woods, did a lot of interesting activities such as adventure sports (hiking, canyoning, climbing), took baths in the river, saw shooting stars and the moon, visited cultural places, and a lot of more things. It was a very peaceful trip in which I was able to spend time with my family, learn new things and disconnect for a few days from the stress of the city and I wouldn’t have been able to experience this trip if it wasn’t for having long holidays, so I’m very grateful for them for not be shorter.

In conclusion, while the argument for shorter, distributed vacations may seem appealing from a logistical standpoint, it fails to account for the deeper benefits of a long summer break. These vacations allow students to recharge, pursue personal interests, and return to school with renewed energy and focused. Rather than increasing stress, a longer break offers an opportunity to relax, reflect, and prepare for the academic year ahead. Instead of reducing the length of summer vacations, we should recognize them for what they truly are, a necessary time for growth, relaxation, and mental recovery.

Last week an interesting article popped up in my screen while I was reading the news. It's tittle was "The case for shorter summer vacations: A necessary reform in education", it claimed that students have learning loss during summer.

This article made me think about this topic and although it gave some good reasons to shorten them, I still disagree with this idea.

To start with, the main idea is that we, students, have learning loss, which is kind of true, obviously after three months of relax, we don't remember everything we learnt last year but, I wouldn't say it's loss, we just have to refresh it and all the knowledge will "come back".

Secondly, another reason it gave was that students and teachers would avoid burnout if breaks were more regular, I see the point they had, but in my opinion the three month summer break is all I'm looking forward all year long. It would be worst if I had to go to class in Summer, firstly because Spain's weather wouldn't allow it, and secondly I feel like it's better to go to class when you are used to it than if they break the routine every now and then.

In conclusion, my answer to the question: should we shorten summer vacations? is no!

Summer vacations go beyond just doing nothing, they are the perfect time to spend time with family, friends, new people you meet, do new activities you don't normally do, meet new cultures, and all the experiences that you get are as important, or even more important than the usual learning.

Last night I read an article that really shocked me about how summer holidays should be shortened because of their little benefit on students.
I totally disagreed with this idea, so I would like to share my point of view.

Firstly, I think summer is very needed by students because it’s a time of the year for relaxing and not being worried about exams. I think we all need a break after all the effort we put in school, as if it was a reward that motivates us, and we really have fun and get great memories on that time of the year. Secondly, I think we may forget a bit about what we have learnt the past year, cause in the end, we aren’t thinking about that in summer, but I think we just need a few days when the classes start to revise and we’ll remember it easily, cause we already should have a base if it was taught in a good way. Thirdly, summer doesn’t mean we waste time or we don’t do anything, but we can read, listen to music, travel, meet with friends, be with family… things that are as important as school (or even more).

In conclusion, I couldn’t imagine being a whole school year without having a summer holiday after, a time of the year in which we can disconnect, relax, have fun, create great memories and even be more prepared for the comeback to school.

In this text, I'm going to write about if summer holidays should be shortened or not. Students, as they have to be focus on their school year, they want to relax themselves during a longest holiday for all the time the have been focused.

In my point of view, holidays are essential for relaxing and everyone enjoy them. The thing that is true is that after holidays when you come back to school, most people forget all the had learnt before summer because of their holidays, as they don't study during a long time.

Another reason because we should keep summer long holidays is that in this part of the year the weather is very hot. I can't imagine how hot must the classes may be during summer, because nowadays we have school during June and most of the times it is very hot inside of them.

Also, during the school year, students have a goal that is to have good marks to not to study during summer. So, when summer comes, is like an award for them, so because of this they are motivated for their long holidays.

I personally don't think short holidays would be a great idea, because they would not have like ''the big reward'' after the school year, so they would be less motivated with everything and maybe they would get easily stressed.

I was absolutely surprised this morning

When I read an article suggesting that summer holidays should be shorter or even banned because it makes the students forget everything they have learnt and I would like te outline some arguments.

On the one hand, I disagree with the suggestion, since I firmly believe summer holidays help students to relax after a long school year and I personally think of it as a reward for trying so hard to get good grades and for me, it is essential to recognize the importance of resting. Summer holidays provide students opportunities to explore hobbies or travel outside of an academic environment. Reducing this time could limit these valuable experiences and increase stress levels among students.

On the other hand, one of the strongest arguments in favor of shorter summer holidays is the issue of learning loss. Studies suggest that students tend to forget a considerable amount of what they learned during the academic year. As a result, teachers often need to dedicate valuable time reviewing old material instead of progressing with new content. A shorter break could help maintain continuity and improve overall performance.

In conclusion, while shorter summer holidays could improve information retention , it is just as important to consider the student’s well-being and the benefits of having time to relax and develop skills. Perhaps the best solution is a balanced approach, where the summer break is slightly reduced, ensuring students to still have enough time to recharge.

To be honest, I couldn´t believe my eyes to read an article suggesting that the school holidays should be shortened. It even drove me mad, because I strongly disagree with this and I am sure that we really need them to rest and refresh our minds.

Firstly, almost the whole economy of Spain depends on tourism, and, without holidays, tourists wouldn´t be able to travel and so all the hotels, restaurants, etc, would decrease a lot.

Secondly, if we hadn´t such long holidays we would go back to school very tired. And what´s more, the experiences and memories we make during the holidays are amazing. We actually need them and nobody is gonna change my mind!!

But, even though I am very stubborn, there is a reason that could convince me: the fact that after the holidays we might forget almost everything we´ve been learning during the school year and if we don´t have any plans they may get a little boring. Anyways, holidays can be mesmerizing if you do leisure activities such as hanging out with friends, go swimming on the beach or whatever... But mostly, holidays are essential for a nice academic performance.

Do you agree with me? I´d love to read your opinion. Let me know what do you think!!

Thanks for your attention.

Goodbye, guys!

I was incredibly surprised when I read an article which suggested that the summer holidays should be shorter to have some days during the middle of the course.

It is said that it is bad for us to leave books and don’t touch them during summer and I strongly disagree this.

Firstly, people which feel entertaining reading might love to read lots of books during summer. I mean we also can learn about different things than in high school.

Secondly, adolescents like also to use holidays to go to camps or do some physical activities with their friends or family

Thirdly we should all students have some breaks, mostly because of our mental health, if not it can get really damaged ando powerful against us. Nowadays society has start to be more in care of this because if not we can even develop mental illnesses.

In muy summer 2024 I did so many things. I visited with my family an unknown province for me that was Galicia and I loved it sooooo much. I enjoyed and admired every single place we visited. The travel made me completely disconnect my mind.

I also went to a music summer camp with some friends I already know thanks to music because I always say that “music join us”. In this camp I learnt lots of thing about my technique in the violin because of an amazing teacher in there.

Although I didn’t study so much I received some clases of a subject form the music conservatory to be more advance in the practice of it.

With this I mean that despite of relaxing and having very good time and memories of this summer y also gave me the possibility to study music mostly all days and have some help with te clases.

Concluding I would say that summer holidays are good and favor us in all aspects. I wouldn’t change them for nothing.
