Why is practicing netiquette important for your students and yourself as a professional, as well as in your personal life? Practicing netiquette is very important because it helps us show respect and consideration to others and makes others glad that we are with them. Without proper manners and etiquette, the customs of polite society would soon disappear and we would act more like animals and less like people. Respect shows others that you are mature and are considerate of their feelings because it is essential to keep in mind the feelings and opinions of others, even if they differ from your own. People have to remember that when they talk to someone over the computer that they are actually real people and saying things that they wouldn't say to their face is not acceptable online. 
I chose this netiquette because I believe that everyone should be treated the same, in person and online. Just because a person is behind the computer doesn't give them the right to say disrespectful things. Another reason why I chose this netiquette is because I believe that if you show respect to someone else then they will give the same respect back to you.
This is important to teach students because their is a lot of online bullying that occurs that people don't realize. Its important to teach students to be respectful online so they don't hurt anyone feelings. I think teaching students to be respectful online helps them to be able to write professional emails. You may think that your posts and comments are usually ignored or don’t receive much attention, but they still remain there and you never know when they come back at you. Additionally, don't post anything online you wouldn't want everyone to see, even if you think it's a secure or a private site.
I chose this netiquette because I strongly believe that people post things for everyone else to see but sometimes they take it to far. For example a student might post an a photo on Instagram in a bathing suit because she looks 'hot' but what about all the people that see it that she isn't friends with? Or the people that will screenshot it and send it to their friends because she would have no idea if they screenshot it or not. Their are accounts where you can put on private and only let people you know follow you but those people could still be the ones that show your picture around. Another reason I chose this was because I don't think everything should be posted on social media. 
'What you post online stays online forever' is important to teach students because they don't realize the danger of sharing their location on sites like Facebook and Twitter. Predators and would-be robbers could be watching. I will teach my future students many different ways to be respectful. First I would separate my students into small groups and have them define what the word respectful means to them. I would go over the meanings and give them words that are the synonyms to help them convey the definition. I would then chose volunteers to help me demonstrate respectful and disrespectful with different scenarios. Once they understand and can comprehend what respectful and disrespectful is in person, I then will show them how to be respectful when they are using technology. I would rent computers for my classroom and depending on the age I'm teaching would do different activities. For example if I'm teaching a fifth grade class then I would use Padlet. First I would show my students interesting videos about social media sites. However then I would proceed to show them the effects of these social media sites if they post everything. I will show statistics of students who have posted something online and got caught. Im going to have them write down on pieces of paper things that they want everyone to know about them. However I would see which ones are not acceptable for everyone to know and tell them its just like posting online. Formal writing should be used to keep a professional image, especially in educational and work settings. Everyone has to remember to keep the barrier between texting lingo and proper writing. Bringing shortcuts for phrases and words into writing online, emails, etc. isn't the time and place for such abbreviations. 
I chose this netiquette because technology has become a prominent use in society today. With kids growing up constantly texting and snapchatting, they are used to talking in abbreviations and shortened phrases daily. We cannot have kids growing up today forgetting how to properly write. We have to continue educating their minds to differentiate between formal and informal writing and when each is appropriate to use.
Reading written content posted online can become difficult and things can be misinterpreted depending on how it was written. Students should learn at a young age, especially in this day in age, to keep a professional reputation. Things that you write online, and the manner in which you write them can follow you in the future. If an idea is taken from someone else, even if you paraphrase it, its better to cite it to play it safe. Give credit where credit is due, if you're getting the information from anywhere but your brain.
I chose this netiquette because this is a highly important topic and can become a serious situation when not done right. Everyone should know how to cite information from multiple different types of media between websites, books, and pictures. There have been plenty of situations where people have gotten legal charges against them for not using public domain data or simply not giving credit to who owns it. All of which could be prevented by stating where it is originally from. 
This is important to teach to students starting at a young age so they get in the habit of crediting the correct sources. Throughout their school careers they will be writing papers and doing projects that require research. When they present the information that they have found, they will need to provide the correct citations.
