This would mostly be sadness and astonishment, because that is the normal human emotion that we have when someone dies. The author created this by showing that Hazel cried and was sad at the moment, but then later forgot because of her intelligence level.

The author created this by finally having Harrison and the ballerina stand up for what they believe in. The author allowed them to have their moment and allow us to believe that maybe they would destroy the dystopian society at last but creates the sadness and anger by letting the Handicapper General shoot them. The accepting aspect came into play when we as the readers realize that in this society, even the strongest cannot survive against the government and its ways.

Personally, I was shocked when this happened, but I found myself even more angry with the author after George and Hazel are unable to comprehend what happens to their son.

While there are many emotions that come along with reading the story, it would seem that the intended emotions were surprise, disgust, and anger. Obviously the surprise comes from how extremely sudden Harrison and the ballerina's deaths were. They were dancing one moment and the next they were falling to the floor, dead. The disgust could stem from the ruthless usage of the double barrel shotgun to kill. It is clear that the Handicapper General has absolutely no remorse or any issue with killing people who are out of line. Her unbridled use of violence paired with the emotionless reaction to their (Harrison and the ballerina's) deaths, could stir up a sort of disgust from those within the current society who consider the actions showcased in those last few scenes to be uncivilized. The anger could come from the death of Harrison and the ballerina's deaths as the reader could have developed some sort of hope that the two would destroy the society as it was and rule over a new society of their own creation. These emotions could have been the intended reactions because of the negative end that seemed to call for negative emotions. This could also be a way to stress the less than happy ending.

I think that we as readers were supposed to react by being surprised as well as frustrated with Harrison's and the Ballerina's execution. I say this because it felt like Harrison would finally show society what it was like to live without handicaps, and then out of no where the general came out with a shotgun and executed Harrison and the ballerina. The author creates this by sparking some romance with the ballerina and Harrison, and with this emotional connection the reader attaches to the two characters. The other thing to add is how George cannot develop and opinion about what just happened to his son and this frustrates the reader.

I think as readers we are supposed to react to Harrison and the ballerinas execution not so much as surprised but more mad. I felt this way because I knew it was him and that girl up against the entire government and we know that they had greater weaponry and power than the two of them. I wanted them to get in power because they were standing up for the correct side of the issue but I also knew they were very small against the rest of the country. Also, the author makes us feel sad in some way that Harrison's mother and father do not remember that their son is being killed because of their handicaps that are preventing them to remember for a long period of time of that terrible moment.

I felt shock and anger, this was due to the fact that they just barged in and killed them. It was abrupt. They were so happy,"They leaped like deer on the moon."(pg. 304) The author creates this by showing that all they wanted to do was show people that without handicaps they can be free, happy, and not shackled down by their own abilities. He makes us want to be them if we were burdened by that futuristic society. But to see them die makes us picture ourselves dying.

As readers, Vonnegut wanted us to feel hurt, upset, shocked, and empathetic towards the executions of Harrison and the ballerina. Of course we are supposed to feel hurt and upset because a death just occurred, and it is our human nature. We were meant to feel shocked due to Vonnegut making their execution a span of two sentences. It was all over so quickly, going from 10 to 0 in an instant, that we the readers were caught off guard. Our empathy towards these characters was created by inviting the dream of being free, only to be cut down like wheat in a field. We wanted to finish what these characters started.

I believe that we are supposed to be angry that this place can't see past their odd way of equality. The U.S. finally had a chance to realize the cruelty of their world through Harrison's rebellion, but they just shot him. Also, I think that we are supposed to be shocked that they killed the ballerina too. She was innocent and just stood up when Harrison asked someone to. So we should be mad that the one person standing up to the horrible government was killed.

I believe that the readers reacted to the executions by feeling shocked, angry, and sad. The span of the executions were just two lines, and this abrupt death of the characters shocked the audience. These characters were killed for showing what they believe in, so the audience feels angry to how the government controls the lives of so many people. The Handicapper general along with the guards do not have to wear any handicaps, and this is inequality in a seemingly equal world. The way the government kills without any mercy saddens readers. They government had a chance to change for the better if they had just listened to what Harrison had to say instead of killing him.

As readers, whenever a conflict reaches its highest point such as the execution of Harrison and the Ballerina we must react in some way shape or form. The author most likely wanted us to realize that Harrison and the Ballerina shouldn't have been murdered because of who they were. This event within the story forces us to realize sometimes equality is difficult to achieve. The reaction from us was disgust and confusion. Our disgust can be explained relatively easy with the barbaric murders on national television. However the confusion stems from the realization that this would never happen. Much like socialism it sounds good on paper whereas if it was enforced it wouldn't promote growth and a healthy society. We can achieve basic equality, but the author takes it to a whole literal manner implying everyone should be the same. The author puts the execution in the story to also enforce his notion that equality is impossible to achieve, however his idea of equality in reality is impossible.
