Crocodilian teeth are adapted for seizing and holding prey, and food is swallowed unchewed. The digestive tract is relatively short, as meat is a fairly simple substance to digest. The stomach is divided into two parts: a muscular gizzard that grinds food, and a digestive chamber where enymes work on it. The stomach is more acidic than that of any other vertebrate and contains ridges for gartroliths, which play a role in the mechanical breakdown of food.

The sea turtles are able to see well both in water and on land, an adaptation that is very helpful for nesting females.

Along with good sight these animals also possess colour vision. A chelonian will be drawn to foods that are green, red, yellow or moving and so depend greatly on their sense of sight.

Chelonians use smell sense also during mating and escape. During the mating season the females will produce pheromone chemicals that will tell the males when they are ready to mate.

Chelonians lack any external ear opening. Turtles can still hear air vibrations. Their tympanic membranes are covered by a thin layer of skin that acts as an ear drum allowing the animal's to hear auditory stimuli.

Even though they are clothed in a bony shell, chelonians are quite capable of feeling touch. This is accomplished by thin lines of nerves running all over the shell. These nerves can pick up pressure differences, but lack pain receptors. So if you were to lightly touch the shell of a turtle, it would feel you doing it.

While many species do possess taste buds, it is not well known how sensitive they are. Some species like the snapping turtles lack taste buds, as do many tortoises. This allows the animals to swallow food that would be considered poisonous or would bite back, without feeling to many ill effects.

Sea turtles like all other turtle species exhibit internal fertilization. Sperm, from the male's penis, leaves the male and enters the female. Fertilization of the egg actually occurs in the oviducts of the female. All species of turtles lay eggs on land. They migrate long distances, thousands of miles, to lay their eggs on the beaches where they were born.

The skin of crocodilians is thick and cornified, and is clad in non-overlapping scales known as scutes, arranged in regular rows and patterns. These scales are continually being produced by cell division in the underlying layer of the epidermis, the stratum germinativum, and the surface of individual scutes sloughs off periodically. The outer surface of the scutes consists of the relatively rigid beta-keratin while the hinge region between the scutes contains only the more pliable alpha- keratin.
