What is REZON8?

REZON8 is a youth-led music project aimed at ages 14-25 where we give young people the opportunity to learn how to use music and lyricism as a tool to positively impact their mental health. Evidence shows that young black men are overrepresented in restrictive mental health settings, yet are least likely to access early interventions and community-based support. Many young people that we work with have voiced that they feel uncomfortable speaking about their mental health in a formal 1-1 setting but would through a similar process using a creative outlet such as music. As a result of this, over the last two years, REZON8 has provided over 200 free recording sessions using the informal structure to give young people the space to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and mental health through music. REZON8 has been developing its practice, using music and lyricism to support young people, specifically thinking about the importance of reflection, utilizing creative processes, improving emotional literacy, and developing mechanisms for self-expression all while using music as the tool.

We probably see Meaningful more than any other young person multiple times a week and there is never a dull moment. Meaningful has a severe stammer however when recording music this just happens to disappear! Each session takes control of the space and uses an online DAW, Bandlab, to record his music which he then takes home and edits himself. If this isn’t commitment to the craft I don’t know what is!

Step into an exciting creative journey with REZON8 Boot Camp Phase II! This is the perfect spot for young artists to stretch their wings, acquire new skills, and engage in meaningful collaborations. Our all-encompassing program will cover writing techniques, studio recording, performance, and so much more. With these skills, we aim to create a collaborative mixtape that will as allow all participants involved to collectively curate an event to showcase their work during CAYA.

This 6-week intensive programme will be led by international slam champion, performance poet, spoken word artist, and writer Y.a Poet alongside Kieron Morris the Director of REZON8.

“I use music as an outlet to release all the negative energy/feelings and give them a place to reside, opposed to letting it manifest within my mind. Acknowledging that the bad thoughts/feelings are present, but getting them out helps to deal with them better”

Lily came to us two years ago having never written an original song before. After working with her through out multiple sessions we were able to write and record 3 amazing songs together and Lily has since gone on to study music performance at university.

This week Lily came back to us with her first song written by herself leaving us speechless from the moment she started singing. Since her first session her lyrical ability, vocal skills & confidence within the studio have improved massively.
